Under the direction of the Provincial Forest Supervisor, this position provides technical support to District forest management operations on Public Lands, forest fire management, and District services. This position plays a significant operational role in the effective delivery of Forests, Fish and Wildlife Divisional programs and services. It ensures programs are implemented to the standards and guidelines specified in Legislation, Divisional policies, schedules, standards, certifications and codes of practice as well as Occupational Health and Safety standards. This position plays a significant role in wildland suppression through implementation of suppression strategies assigned by the Incident Commander or supervising fire suppression operations as Operation Chief, Division Supervisor, Strike Team Leader or Task Force Leader. During certain periods, this person will be the primary service provider to clients wishing to access Forests, Fish and Wildlife services delivered through the District.
Duties will include but are not limited to:
- Assess and recommend management on Public Lands and apply Legislation;
- Prepare Public land management plans;
- Ensure Departmental/Division/Section goals and policies are met and follow Ecosystem-based Forest Management Standards Manual and Public input;
- Assist with the development of management plans and District Operations plans;
- Prepare tender documents and contracts, complete inspections and payments for management treatments being completed on Public Lands;
- Collect forest stand and property information using a variety of forestry tools;
- Create the necessary documentation records for database creation and audit control purposes, verify data and transfer information to appropriate databases for manipulation, Geographic Information System storage and display, or updating the Management Information System and Forest Fire database;
- Active member of the Forests, Fish and Wildlife Wildland Fire team
- Single Resource Leader or operator of portable fire pumps, emergency response equipment, off road tracked tankers and forest fire trucks.
- Required to issue Burning Permits, assist with fire investigations, provide fire standby/on call services and assist with preparation, repair and maintenance of forest fire equipment.
- Provide technical services and report preparation for projects assigned by Supervisor
- Assist in development of forums to collect public input, focus public discussion on Public Land management and liaise with public in the implementation of projects.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduation from a recognized Forestry Technical School or a related combination of technical or professional training in resource management and applied forest management.
- Basic Forest Fire Suppression Course.
- Ability to achieve physical fitness standard identified in the Forests, Fish and Wildlife Physical Fitness Maintenance and Evaluation Policy for Forest Fire Fighters.
- Minimum, five years experience in applied silviculture, forest product volume and quality estimation and forest fire suppression.
- Experience in forest management plan preparation and implementation.
- Demonstrated equivalencies will be considered.
- Valid drivers license.
- Valid First Aid and CPR.
- Proven supervisory skills, preferably in forest management applications.
- Excellent communication and writing skills.
- Good computer skills in database management and word processing.
