Reporting to the Manager, Logistics, Facilities & Material Management, the Supervisor, Provincial Safety is accountable to oversee the overall company Occupational Safety Program and Safe Driving Program for all MHSNL and NLHS staff. They will be accountable to communicate and support the philosophy of the internal responsibility system, as required by the Occupational Health and Safety Act of Newfoundland and Labrador, and to develop related policies, programs, and procedures. Provides leadership by participating, supporting and ensuring accountabilities for all initiatives that foster a culture of safety and a safe work environment. The position will provide input into the vehicle monitoring system structure and deployment to support safe vehicle operations based on established policy.

Job Requirements:

  • Conduct collision investigations, data capture and analysis as well as reporting.
  • Coordinate Safety Programs and Safety Coaches throughout the Province.
  • Coordinates the Provincial Master and Worksite Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committees in the implementation and promotion of Occupational Health and Safety throughout the province.
  • Develops, coordinates and provides education, guidance and support to all MHSNL and NLHS employees including Supervisors, Managers, and Senior Leadership regarding the operation of the OH&S Program.
  • Ensures that the organization is in full compliance with Provincial OH&S Regulations Act.
  • Takes a lead role is ensuring all Infection Control processes are current and appropriately represented within all MHSNL Divisions.
  • Monitors and participates in facility inspections on buildings and property owned and/or leased by MHSNL. The inspection is to ensure compliance with the OHS Act and Regulations and that the facilities are safe for all employees.
  • Investigate and assist in resolving assigned Safety Inquiries (Internal and External) and investigations, in collaboration with Risk Management and the issues management process
  • Acquire and verify driver’s abstracts, conduct, or coordinate driver evaluation during the hiring and remedial processes and provide education during the New Employee Orientation.
  • Provide leadership by participating, supporting, and ensuring accountabilities for all Initiatives that foster a culture of patient safety and a safe work environment.
  • Collaborate and support all aspects of safety within the organization and provide expert opinion based on research and best practices.
  • Support the Quality and Risk department as a team member.

Professional Qualifications & Competencies:

  • Undergraduate degree in a health-related discipline or other discipline or equivalent related to this position is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable to the employer may be considered.
  • Minimum seven years’ experience as an Occupational Health and Safety Specialist or related position.
  • A designation in a safety related field e.g. OH&S Management, Construction Safety etc.
  • Previous driver education training experiences an asset.
  • Completion of related courses in: Occupational Health and Safety Management, Fire Prevention/Safety Management, NS Safety Council Training.
  • Certificate as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional is an asset.
  • Excellent driving record and hold a valid Class 5 licence.
  • Solid knowledge and skill in the areas of workload and time management.
  • Good organizational, written and communication skills.
  • Computer knowledge in word processing, database, and spreadsheet programs.
  • Ability to provide leadership in the areas of safety planning, implementing, integrating, monitoring and evaluating processes.
