Job Description JOB PURPOSE: The Store Clerk/Sales Associate provides service to customers, sorts incoming products, and assists the manager in the maintenance of all store operations.
Characteristic Job Duties The incumbent is responsible for the following range of job duties characteristic, or typical of the job class:
- Contributes to meeting store sales budgets by maintaining customer service standards
- Implements store layout plans to attract customers including window displays and merchandise displays; ensures attractiveness of the store through “Tidy Maintenance”
- Replenishes inventory levels based on Supervisor’s directions
- Processing incoming donations
- Contributes to the control of inventory by retrieving, sorting, and pricing as per directions; protects the store from inventory shrinkage by close visual monitoring
- Contributes to the safety of staff and customers (e.g. snow removal, clear fire exits, no obstacles inside/outside store, cleans spillage and maintains store cleanliness)
- Takes responsibility for the accurate completion of all customer transactions including visa, debit, etc.
- Performs other duties as assigned
NOTE: Not all incumbents perform all of the duties described above but perform a similar range of duties.
Minimum Education Level Attained The successful job applicant will have completed Public School.
NOTE: An alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable.
Special Licenses, Diplomas, Certifications Or Requirements The successful applicant will hold/have:
- N/A
Minimum Prior Related Experience The incumbent must have the following experience before hire:
Up to three months of prior related experience, including life skills.
Physical Effort/Dexterity Required The performance of the job requires continuously standing for long periods of time, frequent twisting, bending, crouching, reaching, reaching overhead, pushing and pulling, lifting, kneeling and entering data for transactions.
Concentration Required The performance of the job requires visual monitoring and frequently working with numbers.
Responsibility For Financial Resources The incumbent’s responsibility for Financial Resources:
The incumbent is involved in minor financial matters regularly, or on a relief basis, or has responsibility for the wise use of his/her own resources. He/She may be authorized to spend, disburse, or collect small amounts of cash. The incumbent has very little input into the annual budget.
Responsibility For Human Resources The incumbent’s responsibility for Human Resources:
The incumbent is responsible for his/her own time and effort only. He/She may demonstrate work methods to new employees, volunteers and/or students.
Work Environment The incumbent’s work environment is typically in the store.
The Incumbent Will Work Under The Following Disagreeable Conditions
- Garbage
- Washrooms
- Odours
- Truck Fumes
- Verbal abuse
- Dealing with angry people
- Work schedule may impact life (weeknights & weekends)
The incumbent may have little to no travel required.
The incumbent works shift (days/nights - vary week to week).
Exposure To Hazards The job incumbent may be exposed to the risk of minor harm, injury or illness due to:
- Physical attacks by others
- Exposure to toxic chemicals
- Moving objects
- Risk of back injuries (throwing back out)
- Other potentially dangerous situations (hold ups)
Precautionary Measures The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to health and safety rules):
- Universal Precautions
- Wear gloves to sort
- Use fatigue mats when required
Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.
Compensation The target hiring range for this position is $17.85 to $18.76 with a maximum of $22.51.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
