- Recruitment range: $72,242- $79,650 starting salary determined by the PEA Collective Agreement.
- Performance range: $93,951 salary range ceiling is available through annual performance increases.
Job Summary
Mandate:
Reporting to the Manager, Network Operations, Network Services, the Network Analyst Operations works as part of a team to ensure the operational effectiveness of UVic campus data and communications networks, comprised of two enterprise data centres and approximately 500 telecommunication rooms spread over 40 buildings. This position performs tier 2 problem determination and resolution including: data; VOIP; Network security and Wireless.
This position will require daily interaction with teams, both formal and ad-hoc, consisting of personnel from within University Systems, from other campus IT units, IT units at other universities and institutions, the research community, and other clients.
Objectives:
- Perform operational duties and tasks that need independent judgement to resolve, often in high-pressure situations, to maximize performance and minimize downtime
- Responsible for determining an appropriate course of action to resolve a problem, which may include the assignment of responsibility to other technical staff. This may be after consultation with Senior Network Analysts
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of telecommunications, information systems, network concepts and technology
- Maintain and update documentation for procedures, incidents and resolutions, in a clear and concise manner to support knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
Normal business hours are 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM, system maintenance may be performed off-hours and major issues are responded to on a 24/7 basis. This position may be required to work outside of regular business hours on an emergency or prescheduled basis.
Job Requirements
This position requires an undergraduate degree or equivalent work experience with network administration, or a related field, along with a broad knowledge of networking protocols, hardware and troubleshooting methodologies. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Knowledge, skills and abilities include:
- csh/bash, Unix/Linux, IPAM, routing, switching
- Understanding and ability to use local and wide area networks, network standards, protocols, network hardware, facilities, configuration, architecture, network security and prevailing networking technologies. These include, but are not limited to:
- TCP/IP routing and switching (OSPF, BGP, EVPN, HSRP, VRFs, policy routing), voice (VoIP), network security (firewalls, IDS/IPS, SSL, VPN, IPSec), packet capture and analysis using protocol analysis, enterprise LAN/WAN network management and network management systems e.g. SNMP, and TCP/IP services such as DNS, DHCP.
In addition, this position requires:
- High degree of attention to detail, as well as the ability to understand complex technical concepts and the need to maintain broad and in-depth technical knowledge of all aspects of networks and network operating systems
- Problem-solving abilities; must be able to effectively identify and resolve unusual and highly complex technical problems
- Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities and work under pressure to solve issues and meet time sensitive and mission critical deadlines in a complex environment
- Ability to take initiative and work with limited direction
- Being a team player, ability to work collaboratively
- Ability to mentor and coach technical staff and teams, and act as a resource
- Ability to successfully contribute to complex projects: developing project work plans; monitoring and directing the activities of a project team
- Excellent written and oral communications skills
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to work outside of normal working hours on an emergency or pre-scheduled basis
