Apprentice pruner

About the role

Nature of the Position

This position differs from that of a tree pruner. You will be paired with a certified arborist (ARBO) and are expected to engage in continuous learning of the methods, practices, and techniques associated with the tasks described, including the safe and proper use of tools and auxiliary equipment.

The employee will be responsible for maintaining their apprentice card valid and up to date, as well as completing all required training.

  • 38 hours/ weeks
  • Monday-Thursday: 6h30-16h00

Responsibilities

  • You will participate in various training-related tasks involving pruning methods and practices, including the handling of specialized tools and equipment. You will work on trees located on public properties, including parks, gardens, medians, and other areas belonging to the City.
  • Your role is to contribute to the optimal preservation of trees by removing dead, harmful, or dangerous branches while respecting their physiology. You may also be required to assist with tree felling, bolting, cabling (bracing), and arboricultural surgery.
  • Operate various equipment: aerial lift (bucket truck), truck with trailer, Hiab crane with grapple, wood chipper, stump grinder.
  • Perform any other related tasks in arboriculture.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Diploma of Vocational Studies (DVS) in arboriculture and pruning

    Apprentice arborist card*

  • Class 3 driver’s license

  • ASP certification – General Health and Safety on construction sites

*As of June 8, in accordance with new Emploi-Québec requirements, the apprentice arborist card is mandatory to perform arboriculture work.

Note You may be required to take a written competency test in French and English.
