This position will work with adult English as Additional Language (EAL) students in a peer relationship to facilitate learning about Manitoba’s culture, history and points of interest with a focus on Indigenous culture. The candidate will plan and lead socio-cultural activities and workshops with instructors and the administrative team and interact with students during organized activities to support them with using English. The candidate will have opportunity to observe English for Academic Purposes classes with experienced instructors. The role also provides administrative support to the unit as needed.
This position will work with ELC staff and adult EAL students which include:
- Canadian and permanent resident students whose first language, or language of adoption, is not English, and in most cases, is French.
- international students.
Availability for occasional weekend activities is required.
Qualifications:
ISSIP REQUIREMENTS:

Must be Indigenous (First Nation, Inuit, Metis).

Must be registered at the University of Manitoba as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in both terms (Fall 2025 and Winter 2026). Students must have a minimum 60% course load (at least 9 credit hours per term for undergraduate students).
EDUCATION:
-
Faculty of Education student or related field
EXPERIENCE:
-
Creating unit/lesson plans and materials.
-
Teaching/facilitating workshops.
-
Planning and organizing events (on and off campus) and leading groups.
-
Working with English as an additional language students would be an asset.
-
Previous experience in an office setting is an asset.
SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Excellent English verbal and written communication skills required.
- Excellent attention to detail required.
- Friendly, open-minded personality with a strong interest in cross cultural learning and communication required.
- Ability to work effectively both as part of a team and independently required.
- Punctual, reliable, responsible and with strong organizational and time-management skills required.
- Ability to adapt to change in a dynamic, fast-paced environment required.
- Ability to solve problems and make competent decisions.
- Ability to use MS Office required.
- Ability to speak French or another language an asset.
- Ability to use social media platforms an asset.
- Knowledge of FIPPA (Freedom of Information & Privacy Act) an asset.
Key responsibilities
Responsibilities:
- Plan, facilitate and lead Indigenous and socio-cultural activities and workshops.
- Provide students with information about Winnipeg, Manitoba and Canada.
- Create and prepare unit/lesson plans and materials.
- Communicate with instructors, students and partners on and off campus.
- Accompany students on excursions (on and off campus) and monitor their safety.
- Monitor and encourage students to use English during events.
- Monitor the disposition and behaviour of students during organized events.
- Ensure that events progress according to schedule and that, start and end times of activities and excursions, are respected.
- Use student feedback to tailor events to student interests.
- Provide updates and reports on events to the administrative team.
- Report incidents during planned events to the Program Director & Program Coordinator (language-related and behavioral concerns, injury, security, health etc).
- Observe teaching of English for Academic Purposes classes and assist instructors with international students.
- Attend and participate in English Language Centre and International Centre events.
- Assist with ELC events such as orientation and celebration of learning.
- Prepare and use social media to promote events with ELC students.
- Take photos at events and compile them as needed.
- Submit created materials, documents and written reports.
- Keep records of attendance and feedback.
- Assist with office-related tasks.
- Complete a program exit survey.
- Comply with UM and ELC policies and procedures.
- Perform other assigned duties as required
