We care more about what you have personally built than about the size of the teams you have worked on. Please attach a cover letter, maximum two pages, that addresses both of the following.

  1. One system you took end to end. Describe an instrument, machine, or automation system that you personally carried from concept or schematic through working, debugged hardware. Be specific about: What the system does and what it had to control or measure The actuators and sensors involved, and how you closed the control loop What you designed yourself at the board level: schematic capture, layout, fabrication vendor, assembly, bring up, rework What you specified or purchased rather than designed, and why you drew the line there What state the system is in today and who uses it

  2. One design that failed. Describe something you built that did not work on the first attempt. We want the symptom, how you isolated it, what the root cause turned out to be, and what you changed. A clear debugging narrative tells us more about you than a clean success story.

Portfolio evidence is required. Include links to repositories, schematics, board photographs, panel builds, or short videos of systems running. Personal projects, competition builds, and academic work count fully. If your professional work is covered by confidentiality obligations, describe it at a level you are permitted to share and supplement it with work you can show.

Myo Palate is a stem cell manufacturing company building the platforms that will produce the next generation of cell based products. About the Position

We are hiring an Electrical and Controls Engineer who will own the electrical, embedded, and control systems workflow for custom bioprocessing equipment and devices. You will take hardware from electrical architecture and board design through firmware, control implementation, integration, commissioning, and the operator facing layer, and deliver systems that run reliably in daily use.

This is not a support role. You own the architecture, the boards, the firmware, the control loops, the panel, the interface, and the data layer. You will work closely with the lead scientist to define system requirements, but the methodology, the implementation, and the quality of the result are yours. There is no existing reference design to copy and no application note for what we are building.

Control here means real closed loop process control against sensor feedback, not sequencing actuators. It also means designing for the practical reality of precision instrumentation and power electronics sharing a chassis. If mixed signal design, control implementation, and grounding strategy are things you actually enjoy, this role will be interesting to you.

The equipment is in R&D and pilot use today, with a defined path toward a commercial product and, later, regulated manufacturing. Maturing early stage control hardware toward a production platform is part of the job, and we expect you to make that selection on technical grounds. The pace is fast, the problems are hard, and the work demands focus and persistence. We are building something that has never been built before and we are looking for people who find that energizing, not exhausting.

About You

Builder first. You would rather have a board on the bench than a specification in a folder Comfortable owning a system end to end and being the person accountable for whether it works A systematic debugger who isolates root cause rather than swapping parts until the symptom moves Fluent across the stack: analog, digital, firmware, control, and all the wiring in between Documents as you go, because someone else will eventually have to service, extend, and manufacture what you build Energized rather than blocked by problems that have no datasheet, no forum thread, and no prior art Clear communicator who can explain electrical constraints to scientists and process engineers in terms they can act on

Qualifications

Required Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Control and Automation Engineering, or a related field 3 or more years of hands-on engineering experience, or a demonstrated equivalent portfolio of independent build work Has personally taken at least one instrument or automation system from schematic through working, field debugged hardware Embedded systems and firmware development in C/C++ and Python across microcontrollers and Linux single board computers, including an understanding of real time constraints and when a control loop must be moved off a non deterministic operating system Closed loop control: PID implementation and tuning, sensor feedback, and handling of coupled multivariable loops Motor and drive control: servo, BLDC, or VFD drives with encoder feedback, plus stepper motors and drivers, pumps, and valves Analog signal conditioning and data acquisition: amplification, filtering, isolation, and ADC selection for process measurements PCB design through fabrication and assembly: schematic capture, layout, vendor handoff, assembly, bring up, and rework, using KiCad, Altium, or an equivalent tool Wiring, control panel build, electrical assembly, and full system integration Communication protocols at both the industrial and board level: at least one of Modbus, CAN, or EtherCAT, plus I2C, SPI, and UART HMI development and process data logging: operator interfaces, alarm handling, live trending, and structured run records Machine safety design: emergency stop architecture, interlocks, fault detection, and defined safe state behaviour Documentation discipline: schematics, wiring diagrams, BOMs, panel layouts, and revision control Independent troubleshooting and rapid iteration in a fast paced R&D environment

Preferred

PLC programming in IEC 61131-3 structured text or ladder logic, using CODESYS, TwinCAT, TIA Portal, Studio 5000, or equivalent SCADA, historian, or time series database experience for process data EMI and EMC mitigation, grounding, and shielding in systems that combine power electronics with precision instrumentation Bioprocess or laboratory instrumentation experience: pumps, fluid paths, sterile connections, sanitary design 3D CAD for enclosure and panel layout coordination

Own the electrical and control architecture for custom bioprocessing equipment and devices Design, lay out, fabricate, assemble, and bring up custom PCBs for sensing, signal conditioning, actuation, and control Develop firmware and control software across microcontrollers and Linux single board computers, with explicit attention to real time behaviour Implement and tune closed loop control against sensor feedback, including coupled process variables Integrate and commission electromechanical hardware and process instrumentation Design analog front ends and data acquisition chains for process measurements Build and maintain the HMI and process data logging layer, including operator interface, alarm handling, trending, and structured, exportable run records Design and implement machine safety: emergency stop architecture, interlocks, fault detection, and safe state behaviour Own the EMI, grounding, and shielding strategy across the system Evaluate and select the production control platform, and migrate control software onto it Produce and maintain schematics, wiring diagrams, BOMs, panel layouts, and revision controlled documentation Move prototype builds toward serviceable, manufacturable hardware: design for manufacture, connectivity, cable management, and service access Collaborate with engineering and science colleagues on enclosure design, panel layout, and instrumentation placement Support the future transition toward a regulated manufacturing environment
