About the role

Musicians support ballet instructors in classes provided at Alberta Ballet School by providing live piano accompaniment for ballet classes.

Responsibilities

  • Provide ballet accompaniment for children’s ballet and adult classes as required by the instructor.

  • Musicians should be able to sight read for syllabus classes and should ideally be able to play music classes from other nationalities, such as Eastern European folk music.

  • Prompt arrival and preparedness for class times as scheduled

  • Ability to sight read music is required.

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in ballet accompaniment is preferred.

  • Ability to follow ballet teacher directions and cues.

  • Ability to improvise.

  • Knowledge of classical ballet repertoire preferred.

  • Music degree preferred.

  • Willingness to learn and adjust to changing abrupt music tempos.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Positive and cooperative attitude is essential.

  • Strong understanding of the world of the performing arts.

  • Ability to understand the role of accompaniment versus performance.

  • Employees are required to successfully pass a police criminal background and vulnerable sector check

  • May include daytime, evenings, and some weekends.

  • Schedules are determined by class enrollment with primary sessions between September to early June. Potential support for summer camps (daytime hours) may be required in July – early August.
