The AFN is an advocacy organization that takes direction and fulfills mandates as directed by First Nations in-Assembly through resolutions. As a national advocacy organization for First Nations, the AFN seeks to advance First Nations Inherent and Treaty Rights through the development of policy, public education, and where applicable, the co-development of legislation to build First Nations capacity.

The AFN was created out of a desire among First Nations leadership for a strong and effective collective advocacy organization. From this, values such as respect for human rights, diversity, justice, and the sovereignty of each rights-holding First Nation guide the work of the organization.

Position Overview

The Assembly of First Nations is seeking a Junior Finance Officer. The Junior Finance Officer supports finance officers to ensure costs are allocated according to established procedures. The procedures are in accordance with approved budget, control of accounts and records in such areas as disbursements, travel expenses, and service contracts. The incumbent may assist others in the Sector as assigned. At times, this position may be required to travel.

Reporting to the Accounts Payable Supervisor, the Junior Finance Officer will have the followingkey duties and responsibilities:

Sector Function

  • Performs day to day financial activities including accounts payables and receivables, printing cheques and posting journal entries

  • Prepare journal entries, month-end accruals

  • Assist with review of GST, PST, QST and NRT returns and payments

  • Participate in audits and data collection efforts and preparing explanations to auditors

  • Assist finance team with disbursements, travel expenses, and service contracts

Team Function

  • Promptly anticipates and responds to information and action requests related to finance and relevant information throughout and across the Sector and other AFN Sectors

Communication Function

  • May be called upon to work as a frontline worker at various policy forums and conference, builds positive rapport with delegates at registration desk

Generic Function

  • Submits leave requests to the Accounts Payable Supervisor

  • Conducts other duties as assigned by the Accounts Payable Supervisor

Position Authority

The Junior Financial Officer makes decisions pertaining to the accurate allocation and disbursement of funds specific to authorized and budgeted expenditures. Anything outside of authorized expenditures is brought to the attention of the Accounts Payable Supervisor for further consultation and direction.

Position Scope/Impact of Error

Accountable to the Accounts Payable Supervisor who oversees all financials and provides advice and guidance. Impact of Error can be significant and negatively impact the credibility and integrity of the Assembly of First Nations.

Who Can Apply

  • Post secondary education in accounting or another relevant field

  • 1-2 years experience in accounting

  • Experience working for Charity or non-profit organization is an asset

  • Knowledge and understanding of current and acceptable financial practices and procedures

  • Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy

  • Experience working with First Nations communities

  • Interpersonal skills, teamwork and judgement

  • Diplomacy, tact and decision-making ability

  • Demonstrated planning & organizational skills

  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and set priorities to ensure timely completion of work within established deadlines

  • Strong computer skills in ACCPAC, Excel
