Senior Database Administrator, Technology Solutions Centre - Enterprise Solutions
About the role
The University of Winnipeg, Technology Solutions Centre – Enterprise Solutions Department seeks an experienced Senior Database Administrator to be responsible for maintaining (administrating, monitoring and improving performance) of the existing and future databases within the Technology Sector. While maintaining and supporting the databases is a big part of the role, the DBA will also provide insight and direction on trends, best practices, and future considerations for growing and expanding our database needs.
We are looking for an individual with a problem-solving mindset and comprehensive knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server and related database platforms and software. The Senior Database Administrator regularly collaborates with technical experts internally and externally to provide solutions in response to emerging technologies which makes it essential for the DBA to remain aware of database trends and upgrade their skills when needed.
TheSenior Database Administrator is a full-time continuingposition located on-site in Winnipeg, MB.
Responsibilities:
- Manage SQL Server databases through multiple product lifecycle environments, from development to mission-critical production systems.
- Develop and maintain scripts, jobs, configuration parameters and programs as they relate to the performance and operation of the database environment.
- Maintains automated job schedules, export/backup scripts and other database maintenance jobs.
- Update/upgrade databases as required.
- Design and implement database in accordance to end user’s information needs and views.
- Works closely with system architecture to come up with database designs that meet client, business and institutional compliance and governance.
- Monitor database performance, implement changes, and apply new patches and versions when required.
- Install, upgrade, and manage database applications.
- Apply data modeling techniques to ensure development and implementation support efforts meet integration and performance expectations.
- Develops and maintains database support documentation which includes documents to support all production and development databases; database creation/maintenance scripts; support documentation that relates to the databases.
- Responsible for the total data management of all production and development databases
- Determine performance objectives, tuning guidelines, capacity planning, disaster recovery, backup and recovery and data security guidelines to meet the University’s business requirements.
- Responsible for ensuring that standards and guidelines are adhered to.
- Leads the creation, optimization, and ongoing enhancement of data warehouses in collaboration with the Enterprise Solutions team, ensuring efficient architecture, performance, and alignment with organizational data strategy.
- Develop processes for optimizing database security.
- Manage database access.
- Evaluates security management measures and indicators and decides if compliant to information security policy.
- Investigates and instigates remedial measures to address any security breaches.
- Maintains technical knowledge by attending educational workshops (conferences/courses); reviewing publications; establishing personal networks; participating in technical societies.
Qualifications:
- A degree in a computer discipline or relevant certification or Microsoft SQL Server Database Administration certification.
- A minimum of 5 years working as a Database Administrator, preference with Microsoft SQL Server.
- Experience with High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) options for Microsoft SQL Server.
- Experience with MS Azure and Azure managed instance databases.
- Experience with Ellucian based databases an asset.
- Comprehensive knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server and related platforms and software.
- Strong and demonstrable experience as DBA managing Microsoft SQL Server environments.
- Experience clustering SQL servers
- Experience working with MySQL
- Experience in configuring and managing data warehouses.
- Familiar with SSIS or other ETL (Extract Transcript Load) Tools
- Ability to develop and maintain scripts, jobs, configuration parameters and programs as they relate to the performance and operation of the database environment.
- Ability to maintain automated job schedules, export/backup scripts and other database maintenance jobs.
- Experience with security as it applies to database management
- Experience in API integration at a database level
An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.
Condition(s) of Employment:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
The salary range for this position will be from $73,873.80 to $102,520.60 annually.
