Manager, Grid Telecom Operations
Number of positions: 1 Job Location: Fraser Vly Office
Employment type: Permanent Region: Lower Mainland
Hours of work: Full-time (37.5 hrs/wk) Flexible Work Role: Resident
Annual salary: $ 158,900.00 - 200,900.00
Position Highlights Reporting to the Director of Transmission and Distribution System Operations, the Manager of Grid Telecommunications
Operations is responsible for overseeing the Central Telecommunications Operations for the BCH Provincial Bulk Electric
Telecom System and Control Center Voice Systems. This role ensures the reliability and safety of the Bulk Electric System
through effective management of telecom systems and real-time operational decisions.
This role is primarily focussed on providing oversight for an integrated central operational business group with multiple
managers and multiple workstreams to ensure sustainment of the BC Hydro provincial telecom system and associated
operations technology.
What you'll do
- Lead and coach a team of 30+ people plus contractors with various experience levels in delivering on the core mission of
safe and reliable telecom operations systems.

Oversee all planned and real-time aspects of telecom operations, ensuring system reliability and safety.

Manage ongoing maintenance, capital delivery, and real-time changes to the telecom system.

Make real-time decisions during environmental and grid-related emergencies, including recommending opening BCH
emergency centers when necessary.
- Lead and influence discussions on operational risks, project priorities, and integration of new assets into production
systems.
- Ensure the reliability and safety of the Bulk Electric System by overseeing telecom systems and control center voice
systems.

Manage real-time decisions, support, and coordination for grid telecom issues and project delivery tasks.

Promote a trusted culture of real-time decision-making at appropriate risk levels required in operations.

Lead engagement in discussions to set direction and priority for system-wide asset replacement due to systematic failures.

Contribute as an ongoing key stakeholder in replacement selection, testing, and integration of assets into the production
system.
- Actively promote and support the development of team members through regular feedback and provide guidance and
support for their personal development plans and year specific objectives.
- Liaise with peers across BC Hydro to coordinate on risk identification, prioritization and mitigation strategies. Review
scope of all CIPD/PCM projects that have telecom deliverables.

Manage real-time oversight of the provincial telecom system under evolving risks.

Adjust telecom priorities based on environmental and electric grid conditions.

Support emergency centers operations and contribute to storm and emergency calls.
What you bring
- P.Eng. Electrical specializing in Telecommunications, PMP, or CompSci degree with 10+ years in Utility
Telecommunications, or equivalent education and experience..
- 5+ years of technical and business understanding of telecom impacts on the Bulk Electric System, or other large utility
operations.
- 10+ years management roles within Telecom Systems, Networking, Computing Infrastructure, Telephony, and
Cybersecurity. Experience managing within a union environment in management roles is considered an asset.

Deep knowledge of telecom assets and the risks during maintenance and project integration.

Proven ability to manage multiple teams and managed service contracts, and make long-term strategic decisions.

In-depth understanding of Telecom for Electric Grid Protection and Control.

Knowledge of OT computer infrastructure, cybersecurity, and packet-based telecom systems.

Excellent written and verbal communications skills, with a calm and assertive presence.

Effective presentation skills, including the ability to convey complex technical issues to diverse audiences.

Strong problem-solving skills and ability to prioritize work of others.

Strong interpersonal skills including relationship building at all levels in the organization.

Strong executive level communication skills including writing, presenting, and facilitation.

Strong leadership with the demonstrated ability to build, motivate, and maintain high performing teams.

Ability to collaborate with diverse teams across a large enterprise.
