About the role

Job Summary Reporting to the Manager, Emergency Department, the R.N. is responsible for patient assessment, priority setting, implementing Emergency Department nursing care and initiation of treatment, crisis intervention and the education of both patients and their families.

The R.N. adheres to the philosophy, policies, procedures and standards of the hospital and the Emergency Department and complies with all safety procedures on safe working techniques and reports any unsafe conditions to the Manager.

The R.N. also demonstrates professionalism and participates in Quality Improvement activities of the department. The R.N. complies with the Occupational Health and Safety standards for the hospital and is proactive in promoting a safe work environment.

Qualifications

  • Emergency nursing experience care for all types of patients including adult, maternal and pediatric populations - preferred
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of anatomy and pathophysiology with special attention to the cardiac, respiratory and neurological systems - preferred
  • Advanced nursing skills: arrhythmia interpretation, performance of 12/15 lead EKG, administration of cardiac and vasoactive medications, care of patients with central lines and arterial lines, etc. - preferred
  • Demonstrated effective problem solving/critical thinking
  • Effective interpersonal communication (interdepartmental, patient/family)
  • Commitment to patient focus and family centered care.
  • Ability to work effectively within a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to communicate in French language an asset

Education/Training Experience

  • Current Certificate of Registration issued through the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Emergency Department experience - preferred
  • ACLS, ENPC and TNCC (or completed within 6 months of hire) – required
  • NIHSS certificate (or completed within 6 months of hire and renewed every 2 years) – required
  • BCLS - required
  • PALS (or completed within 6 months of hire) - preferred
  • EKG Interpretation Certificate OR demonstrated ability to interpret EKG - required
  • Successful completion of the Emergency Nursing Course upon transfer to the unit (If not already completed) – required

Testing Required

  • EKG Interpretation and Medication Calculation.
