The Portland Canal Transportation Limited Partnerships's Stewart mining division specializes in serving key customers by hauling copper ore from various mine sites to the Port of Stewart, where it is loaded onto vessels for export overseas. Our division is comprised of approximately 45 professional truck drivers, with equipment maintained by a dedicated onsite shop. As an Operations Safety Supervisor , you will be supported by a Division Manager, Operations Supervisors, an Administrator, Shop Foreman, and the many Portland Canal Transportation LP employees who provide essential support services throughout the company.
Portland Canal Transportation Limited Partnership is a groundbreaking joint venture proudly operated by the Nisga’a Nation, Tahltan Nation Development Corporation (TNDC), and Arrow Transportation Systems Inc. This partnership has established the Port of Stewart as British Columbia’s first majority Indigenous-owned port—a significant milestone in advancing Indigenous economic leadership and ensuring full supply chain participation, from mining through to global export. Shift Rotational fly-in fly-out schedule - 2 weeks on, 1 week off (1 week on-site at each mine, followed by 1 week off. This position includes two travel days within each scheduled shift period.)

Working closely with the Division Manager, the Operations Safety Supervisor will lead safety and operational compliance initiatives for trucking and site activities for Portland Canal Transportation while supporting a proactive safety culture at mine sites. This role bridges operations and health & safety, ensuring alignment with Arrow standards and client requirements while driving continuous improvement toward an interdependent safety culture.
Major Responsibilities
- Champion a proactive safety approach, moving from reactive to interdependent culture.
- Conduct daily safety meetings and toolbox talks; reinforce shared responsibility for safety.
- Though Field Level engagement identifies gaps between Arrow and client SOPs; implement corrective actions to ensure consistency across sites.
- Monitor trucking operations at mine sites for compliance with safety and regulatory standards (WorkSafe BC, NSC/CVSE, Mine Acts).
- Perform Critical Control Verifications (CCVs) and coach operators on hazard prevention and safe practices.
- Oversee vehicle inspections and ensure standards are met.
- Confirm onboarding competency and refresher safety training for drivers and site personnel.
- Support continuous training on hazard awareness and Safe Work Practices.
- Respond to incidents and near-misses; lead investigations and submit reports for on-site incidents, support investigations and coordinate reports for off-site incidents.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, certifications, and compliance audits.
- Act as Portland Canals internal liaison between office and field; provide weekly written reports on safety performance and operational compliance to Management and Customer.
- Collaborate with client supervisors and managers to align safety expectations and operational goals.
- Perform other duties as required or assigned by Regional Manager and/or Director of Safety.
- Preference given to bachelor's degree in OHS, business, and/or degree/certification relevant to the responsibilities.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in a supervisory capacity.
- Minimum 5 years progressive work experience in injury prevention, safety compliance, OHS management systems, research, and policy development and/or project management.
- Strong background in transportation safety and mining industry standards and regulatory compliance (WorkSafeBC, NSC/CVSE, Mine Acts).
- Valid class 5 driver’s license and clean driver’s abstract.
- Experience in conducting safety audits, investigations, and training programs.
- Experience with gathering and compilation of data, preparation and reports.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills; ability to influence culture change.
- Technologically proficient with the ability to use digital tools for reporting, data analysis, and communication (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, safety management systems, and mobile applications).
- Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritizing, and execution skills.
- Proven excellence and commitment to customer service both internal and external.
- Demonstrated superior interpersonal skills.
- Ability to identify and solve complex problems.
- Inductive reasoning to create workplace safety resolutions.
