About the role

In your role as Internal Auditor at The North West Company (TNWC), you will work with a team of audit professionals in developing and executing detailed audit plans to identify potential areas of risk at TNWC and its subsidiaries. This will be accomplished by assessing the adequacy of internal controls, determining compliance with government regulations and internal policies and procedures, evaluating efficiency and effectiveness of operations to identify improvement opportunities, and working with business partners to ensure appropriate risk mitigation. The Internal Auditor will work closely with the business stakeholders to ensure that control documentation is maintained, testing completed and findings related to Internal Controls Over Financial Reporting (ICOFR) are assessed and reported to Senior Management.

Your Role:

  • With the direction and support of the Director Internal Audit, provide support for the delivery of the overall Internal Audit program

  • Plan and execute internal audits using an approved risk based methodology to assess the adequacy of internal controls, determine compliance with regulations and internal policies and procedures, evaluate efficiency and effectiveness of operations, and identify improvement opportunities.

  • Maintain and enhance well-defined ICOFR strategy that supports corporate values

  • Review and update key risks and connect to audit assertions that support the overall ICOFR strategy, control selection and testing approach

  • Contribute to improving ICOFR control design and automation balancing automated vs manual controls, and preventative versus detective

  • Execute annual ICOFR testing leveraging managements knowledge and expertise

  • Prioritize and communicate remediation of any control deficiencies to both the process owners and senior management

  • Complete audit work on behalf of the external auditors to ensure proper audit coverage, elimination of duplicate effort, and ensuring the efficiency and effectiveness of internal and external audit activities

Desired Skills & Experience:

  • Post-secondary education preferably in business, accounting, finance, or information technology

  • Professional accounting designation (CPA) is an asset

  • Previous experience at a publicly accountable enterprise or articling experience in public practice is preferred

  • Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) and/or Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) designation is an asset

  • Ability to act as process consultant to management across the organization

  • Attention to detail and strong analytical, organizational and communication skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines

  • Ability to define deliverables, complete audit testing and draft reports

  • Highly self-motivated with the ability to work independently and in a team environment

  • Required to travel approximately 30 to 50 days per year
