Position Summary:

The SADV Follow Up Nurse is a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner providing specialized nursing care to women, children and men who have experienced sexual assault (SA) and/or intimate partner violence (IPV). They provide acute and follow-up care to individuals in crisis resulting from sexual assault and/or IPV.

The Follow-Up Nurse works in an environment where full-scope nursing is vital to the function of the multi-disciplinary team. The practice of nursing with its unique emphasis on the art and science of caring is ideally suited to the provision of comprehensive acute and follow-up client centered care to victims of SA and IPV.

They support high quality, safe, effective care in a consensual partnership with patients, in accordance with the OHA Standards for Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence and the College of Nurses of Ontario standards and GGH’s mission, vision, values and policies.

They advocate for the best forensic nursing practice that is inclusive, equitable and culturally competent by building collaborative interprofessional and intersectoral relationships.

Qualifications, Experience, Skills and Abilities:

  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse, in good standing, with the College of Nurses of Ontario

  • BScN degree

  • Sexual Assault Nurse (SANE) Examiner Certification for both Adult and Pediatric populations

  • Minimum 3 years’ recent clinical experience in a Sexual Assault Care setting

  • Crisis de-escalation and counselling experience

  • Confidence to perform public speaking to larger audiences

  • IAFN and CFNA professional organization membership preferred

  • Strong community development and outreach

  • Excellent communication, facilitation, presentation, public speaking, training and counselling skills

  • Excellent support and skill in assisting others with decision making

  • Knowledge of and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion

  • Understands sexual and domestic violence is a gender equity issue within a feminist and anti oppression framework.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the determinants of health and the effects of poverty, adverse childhood events, isolation and marginalization

  • Demonstrated understanding of the complexities of Intimate partner violence, sexual violence and sexual exploitation through human trafficking

  • Demonstrated understanding of the neurobiology of trauma and the ability to apply trauma-informed, evidence-based forensic nursing care through critical inquiry and assessment

  • Experience with testifying in court and supporting witnesses and staff in the legal process preferred

  • Demonstrated commitment to best practice, nursing standards and life-long learning

  • Strong critical thinking, problem solving, conflict resolution and decision-making skills

  • Demonstrated excellent assessment skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment

  • Demonstrated commitment to excellent customer service when interacting with patients, families, colleagues and physicians
