The City of Edmonton's Safe Mobility Section is seeking a dedicated and skilled Engineering Technologist II to join their team. This position is a crucial part of the City's Vision Zero strategy, which aims to achieve zero traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries by 2032. The Safe Mobility Section is at the forefront of this initiative, working to create safe and livable streets for all Edmontonians. As an Engineering Technologist II, you will play a key technical role, using your expertise to support the Engineering team and help implement evidence-based policies and solutions to improve road safety for everyone.

The Engineering Technologist II is a technical position that supports the Engineering team within the Safe Mobility Section. This role is integral to the City's Vision Zero efforts, which seek to eliminate traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries by 2032. You will use various software and graphic applications to draft concept plans, prepare graphics for public notices and reports, and conduct fieldwork and data collection. A key part of the role involves responding to inquiries from the public, City staff, and City Council. You will also act as a technical resource for the Section, utilizing programs like MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil3D, and SAP. The position requires balancing the needs of the public with corporate processes, systems, and resources, while working under deadlines. This role ensures that traffic safety concerns are addressed efficiently and aligns with the principles of the Safe Mobility Strategy.

What will you do?

  • Review project scopes and objectives with supervising engineers and coordinate with other branches, departments, and consultants
  • Develop and design permanent and temporary traffic safety layout plans, ensuring designs meet existing and future safety and operational requirements
  • Prepare plans for cost estimating and assist in providing direction to technical support staff
  • Prepare maps and display materials using MicroStation or other applications to translate complex engineering concepts into easily understood information for the public
  • Coordinate data collection efforts, participate in fieldwork, review and evaluate data, and prepare recommendations based on your analysis.
  • Coordinate field testing of new equipment and procedures
  • Provide input on project scheduling and research information to aid in responses to legal claims
  • Respond to inquiries from the public, City staff, and City Council, including attending public events
  • Review and comment on preliminary and detailed engineering design plans and represent the team on various internal and external committees
  • Support in updating the Traffic and Speed Zones Bylaws as well as various internal technical guidelines and manuals related to signage and pavement markings
  • Respond to inquiries about crosswalks, schools & playgrounds, traffic signs and pavement markings, as well as parking. Review parking applications such as Accessible Parking zones, and review other parking related inquiries related to safe operations
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications:

  • A Diploma in Engineering Technology is required
  • Eligibility for ASET membership as a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T) is necessary

Assets:

  • Experience in the transportation or municipal engineering field
  • Knowledge of the City of Edmonton's Complete Street Guidelines and Vision Zero principles

Skills required for success:

  • Strong technical skills with software such as MicroStation/GEA, AutoCAD, and Civil3D
  • Knowledge of design, pavement marking, operational, and traffic safety guidelines and standards
  • Ability to conduct field reviews and identify traffic safety concerns
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills to develop and analyze design options
  • Effective time management and prioritization skills to work under tight deadlines
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact with the public, City staff, and external collaborators

Conditions of Employment:

  • Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent).

Work Environment:

  • This position operates in a professional office setting but also requires fieldwork and attending public events. The role is considered sedentary, but you may be exposed to working alone and need to wear protective equipment such as safety footwear, head protection, and eye protection during fieldwork
  • Note: The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement, and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
  • Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
