Position Summary

Reporting to the Foreman, Arenas & Field Operations, the Operator I - Arenas & Field position performs a wide variety of work functions within the City’s facilities under the Culture & Recreation Services Department. The position uses safe work practices and procedures to carry out assigned tasks and contributes to the overall effectiveness of the work team. The Operator I - Arenas & Field must sustain a level of service to ensure a safe, healthy and comfortable environment is provided for facility users in the Arenas (3) and Taurus Field.

Responsibilities

of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform janitorial, preventative maintenance, and repair duties upon facility and equipment.
  • Operation of light, medium duty equipment in a safe and efficient manner used in the maintenance of arenas, Taurus Field, sidewalks, and open spaces.
  • Perform ice maintenance duties to provide a clean, smooth, clearly marked, level ice surface of minimum thickness.
  • Ensure facilities are unlocked, and/or secured in accordance with all schedules, policies and procedures.
  • Exterior litter control of the arenas (3), DCC and Taurus Field. This involves the control of loose litter on sidewalks, parking lots, and green spaces, as well as the emptying of outdoor garbage receptacles around the facilities.
  • Grass cutting, maintenance of plants, shrubs and flowers around the facilities. During the winter months, this position is responsible for snow removal at all arenas, DCC and Taurus Field sidewalks and entryways.
  • Minor furniture and equipment moving, office reorganizing, and transport of recycle materials.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess a high school diploma or equivalent education and a valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License. A minimum of 2 years’ experience in the operation of ice surfacing equipment, facility experience, monitoring and troubleshooting of arena refrigeration systems, facility and equipment maintenance is required. This position requires 2 years’ experience installing arena ice and removing at year end; this includes the installation of ice logos, lines and goal creases. Completion of the AARFP Arena Operator Level I certifications is required. The incumbent will have prior experience operating a variety of maintenance and snow removal equipment along with knowledge of the operation and service of a wide variety of equipment used at the Arenas, Dow Centennial Centre and Taurus Field. Excellent communication and customer service skills are essential. This is a physically demanding position and requires the successful candidate to work in a variety of adverse weather conditions.

This position is within the scope of C.U.P.E. Local 30, and as such, you will be required to adhere to the articles contained within the Collective Agreement. A current Driver’s Abstract will be required at the time of interview.

Hours of Work: Monday – Sunday; Varying day, evening and weekend shifts. The number of hours of work per week may vary and cannot be forecasted.
