Course Information

An introduction to curriculum and pedagogy in general science in the Intermediate and Senior Divisions, with particular focus on developing understandings of concepts related to biology, chemistry, physics, and Earth and space science, and relating science to technology, society, and the environment (STSE). The course explores a number of topics, including culturally relevant curriculum, materials and strategies that develop and refine STEM skills, and relevance and application of science in different contexts, with a goal of enhancing global scientific literacy. Emphasis is placed on curriculum and pedagogies that effectively incorporate equity, diversity, inclusivity, and decolonization (EDID). 1.0 credit

The Limited Duties Instructor will be responsible for delivering curriculum and instruction that prepares teacher candidates to teach General Science in Intermediate and Senior grades. The instructor will model inclusive, hands-on, and inquiry-based science teaching strategies that connect cross-disciplinary science content with real-world issues and contemporary educational goals. Emphasis will be placed on developing candidates’ understanding of STEM, STSE and culturally relevant pedagogy, as well as strengthening their competence across multiple science disciplines.

Design and deliver course content aligned with the Ontario Science Curriculum (Grades 7–12) and applicable Ministry of Education policies.
Model interdisciplinary approaches to science instruction that integrate biology, chemistry, physics, and Earth and space science.
Emphasize inquiry-based learning, real-world applications, and the development of critical thinking and scientific literacy.
Incorporate pedagogies that reflect EDID principles and foster equitable learning environments.
Support teacher candidates in developing instructional plans, assessments, and strategies that integrate STEM skills and STSE perspectives.
Provide regular feedback and assessment of candidate progress aligned with course learning outcomes.
Maintain regular communication with teacher candidates and respond to their learning needs.
Collaborate with course team or administration to ensure alignment with B.Ed. program goals and standards

Responsibilities

You will be responsible for all activities associated with the successful delivery of the course, including but not limited to: developing, preparing, and delivering the course; setting and marking examinations, assessing the academic work of students, and reporting grades.

Candidates must be willing to undertake training as required by the Employer including, but not limited to, training in respect of health and safety, harassment and discrimination, and legislated service standards.

Qualifications

Qualifications (Minimum Required):

  • Master’s degree or equivalent qualification in science education.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a teachable science subject (e.g., biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science).

  • Demonstrated qualifications and experience teaching General Science at the Intermediate and/or Senior level.

  • Demonstrated record of performance in classroom teaching and ability to support teacher candidates in multiple strands of science education.

  • Record of effective teaching performance in post-secondary or teacher education settings.

Preferred Qualifications / Assets:

  • Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) certification in good standing (current) or held within the last five years.
  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. in science education, STEM education, or related field.
  • OCT Honours Specialist Schedule E Qualification in Science.
  • Experience with decolonizing science education, including the integration of Indigenous perspectives and land-based learning.
  • Familiarity with Growing Success (2010)
  • Demonstrated capacity to support inclusive, inquiry-rich, and environmentally responsible pedagogy.
  • Experience supporting pre-service teachers in developing STEM-focused, integrative lesson design.
