The Department of Biology offers a Bachelor of Science Biology major with three concentrations (Cellular & Molecular Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, and Ecology & Evolution), an Honours Biology degree, and a Biology minor.
#About the Role
The Department of Biology in the Faculty of Science & Technology invites applications for a Cellular and Molecular Biology Laboratory Technologist position to commence May 19, 2026.
In collaboration with instructors, the Technologist organizes and prepares laboratory procedures, equipment, and supplies required for assigned laboratory courses, which could include courses in genetics, molecular genetics, cell biology, molecular biology, molecular ecology, or biochemistry. The Technologist is also expected to provide feedback that would lead to improvements in student laboratory experience. They also provide training and guidance for student and faculty researchers regarding lab safety, equipment use, and experimental protocols.
The Laboratory Technologist is responsible for the procurement of lab materials and consumables, for maintenance and calibration of lab equipment, and for safety and waste management associated with their assigned laboratories. Through their work, the Technologist enables the success of the Department's programs by providing relevant services, support, resources, expertise, and training to employees and students, and by ensuring the effective maintenance of the laboratory environment. The technologist also supports research laboratory spaces in the Department of Biology and facilitates the work of student researchers using laboratory spaces in the Department of Biology.
This is a full-time, permanent position, working 35 hours per week.
##Responsibilities

Prepare and organize laboratory procedures, equipment, and materials for courses in cell and molecular biology, genetics, and biochemistry.

Plan and coordinate lab activities in collaboration with instructors.

Provide training, guidance, and technical support to faculty, instructors, and students.

Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment.

Procure laboratory supplies and manage inventory of materials and consumables.

Ensure compliance with safety regulations (biosafety, WHMIS, TDG) and maintain proper waste handling, storage, and labeling.

Review and update safety documentation (e.g., MSDS) annually.

Support research laboratories and assist student researchers in lab spaces.

Improve laboratory procedures to enhance efficiency, safety, and student learning experience.

Utilize relevant technology, software, and equipment to support teaching and lab operations.
##Qualifications

Master's degree in Biological Sciences or a related field.
-
Minimum 3 years working in a professional or academic laboratory setting.

Experience maintaining cell culture lines.
-
Experience with confocal and/or epifluorescence microscopy.
-
Experience with immunohistochemistry and fluorescence staining.
-
Experience with current molecular biology protocols, including but not limited to, recombinant DNA techniques and PCR.

Experience with the operation, calibration, and maintenance of cellular and molecular biology lab equipment.

Experience maintaining Drosophila, C. elegans, or other common genetic model organisms.
-
Experience with laboratory safety, including management of hazardous waste and biohazards.
-
Excellent organizational skills.
-
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
-
Experience managing lab inventory and working with vendors.
-
Strong technical skills congruent with supporting a wide range of university-level science laboratory activities.
Salary:$64,264.20 - $81,299.40 per annum
