Position Description University of Calgary Continuing Education (ContEd) is currently recruiting forAcademic Success Mentors/Tutors (contract/term position) for the Pre-Pathways to Education for Indigenous Students (PEISSA) Program in the 2025-2026 academic year.
In support of the University of Calgary's core principles and financial objectives, Continuing Education is an academic unit with a mandate to respond to the needs of the community through the design, development and delivery of high-quality lifelong learning opportunities.
ThePre-Pathways to Education for Indigenous Students (PEISSA) Program at the University of Calgary Continuing Education supports Indigenous students across Canada in completing high school prerequisites required for admission into UCalgary programs. The program provides tuition, textbooks, and one-on-one academic guidance, made possible through the UCalgary Students¿ Union Quality Money Grant.
PEISSA stands for Pre-Pathways to Education for Indigenous Students in Southern Alberta. While its origins are rooted in Southern Alberta, the program now supports Indigenous learners nationwide. PEISSA emphasizes academic and cultural support, offering access to Indigenous Academic Advisors, Elders, and cultural activities to ensure that students are holistically supported throughout their academic journey.
The PEISSA program is hiring four Academic Success Mentors/Tutors (contract/term position) to provide academic tutoring and mentorship across a variety of subjects. Academic Success Mentors/Tutors will lead scheduled drop-in sessions and provide one-on-one support to students throughout the semester.
Tutoring Focus Areas:
- Mathematics (1-2 tutors): Math 10C, Math 20-1, Math 30-2, Math 30-1, Math 31
- Sciences (1-2 tutors): Physics 20/30, Biology 20/30, Chemistry 20/30
- Humanities (1 tutor): English 30, Social 30, Indigenous Studies 30

Scope of Responsibilities (high level)
- Commit to the 12-week semester, dedicating between 4 and 10 hours per week to preparation, tutoring, progress reporting, and supporting students¿ academic skill development (learning strategies, study skills, confidence, self-advocacy, organization, time management, intercultural communication, and navigating university systems).
- Utilize Zoom to facilitate weekly online drop-in sessions and provide one-on-one tutoring by appointment
- Utilize Desire2Learn (D2L) to communicate with students and share resources
Qualifications
- Currently registered in one full university credit course or more or registered as a Graduate Student at the University of Calgary.
- Availability to work shifts ranging from 4 to 10 hours per week.
- Strong academic standing in relevant subject areas, with a minimum of two years of post-secondary study completed.
- Confidence in presenting and facilitating sessions for small to medium-sized groups (2¿30 participants).
- Demonstrated experience in community engagement (e.g., mentorship, leadership, volunteerism, coaching, cultural involvement).
- Commitment to supporting Indigenous students, staff, faculty, and community members.
- Proficiency with online learning platforms (e.g., Zoom, D2L) and University of Calgary web-based systems.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Professionalism, leadership ability, and sound judgment.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage workload, tasks, and deadlines effectively.
Preferred:
- Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in good academic standing (GPA of 3.0 or higher).
- Pre-service teacher with knowledge of universal design for learning and culturally responsive pedagogies.
- Experience supporting students with diverse learning needs (e.g., learning disabilities, neurodivergence, accessibility, trauma-informed practice).
- Previous tutoring or academic mentoring experience.
- Knowledge of learning strategies and foundational skill development.
- Strong mathematics and/or science subject matter expertise.
- Lived experience as an Indigenous person.
- Applicants may be asked to provide a copy of transcripts in support of their application.
Supports Provided for Academic Success Mentor/Tutors:
Academic Success Mentors/Tutors will be provided with support and mentorship by a Program Specialist and Certified Teacher throughout their contract. This will include:
- Orientation, training and ongoing support
- Coaching on inter-cultural capacity building¿ Referrals to University of Calgary offices
- References (verbal or written)
