As a Senior Vegetation and Wetland Ecologist, you will join the Calgary or Edmonton, Alberta office as part of our Western Terrestrial Services Team. The successful applicant will be mostly office based (80%) with some field support and site visits (20%). You will be involved in a broad range of projects with responsibilities as follows:
- Manage and provide senior technical input on vegetation and wetland technical work including environmental assessments, biophysical impact assessments, environmental evaluations and wetland assessments
- Support business development activities such as proposals and cost estimates
- Provide technical input and support to our intermediate and junior staff on a variety of project
- Design and execute complex biological investigations and oversee field surveys
- Prepare and/or review technical reports, proposals, cost estimates and marketing materials
- Collaborate with private and public sector clients, approval agencies, sub-consultants, and subcontractors
- Leverage existing client relationships and cultivate new relationships to generate business development opportunities for our terrestrial services business line
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams (e.g., wildlife, soils, hydrology, GIS, regulatory)
- Mentor and develop junior and intermediate staff members
- Support complex field programs as a senior leader, including limited amounts of field work as required
What We Are Looking For
- A minimum of 10 years of consulting experience in a directly related role
- A bachelor’s or master’s degree in ecology, biology, environmental science, or a related field with a focus on vegetation and wetland ecology or environmental science
- Registration in a professional organization (e.g. P.Biol. (Alberta) or R.P.Bio. (BC) or professional agrologist (P.Ag.)).
- Strong project management skills, including developing and monitoring of budgets, approved project scope and schedule, organizational skills, staff supervision and team communications
- Technical abilities in the areas of ecological study design, field sampling protocols, statistical analysis and report preparation and review
- Experience overseeing moderately complex projects, including review of reports and technical components for vegetation and wetlands
- Experience conducting wetland assessment and regulatory reporting in Alberta in accordance with the Alberta Wetland Policy, including submission of regulatory applications (e.g., WAIFs and WAIRs)
- Experience with rare plant surveys and mitigation, ecological land classification, habitat quality assessments and invasive species/weed monitoring and management
- Experience with native grassland health assessments and management
- Experience leading field programs and managing environmental components of complex projects
- Experience working in different ecosystems in western Canada, including native grasslands and boreal forest.
- Familiarity with pertinent regulatory requirements (e.g., Albert Wetland Policy) and processes
- Experience scoping, completing and participating in the regulatory review process for large multi-disciplinary environmental assessments
- Ability to work on a variety of projects in various sectors (e.g., oil and gas, renewable energy, infrastructure).
- Strong organizational skills with the demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, plan, schedule, and coordinate various activities relating to projects and proposal submissions
- Willingness to provide technical direction and active mentorship to junior and intermediate professionals and project managers
- A valid Class 5 driver’s license with no restrictions and a clean driving record
