Job Description
This position supports both the McMaster Institute for Research on Aging (MIRA) and the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA).
The Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging is a large, national, long-term study of more than 50,000 individuals who were between the ages of 45 and 85 when recruited. These participants will be followed until 2033 or death. The aim of the CLSA is to find ways to help us live long and live well, and understand why some people age in healthy fashion while others do not.
The McMaster Institute for Research on Aging (MIA) is an interdisciplinary research institute advancing the science of aging. MIRA’s approach is to conduct research in cross-Faculty teams and engage the older adult community, their families, healthcare providers and other key stakeholders through every stage of our activities, from research to evaluation and implementation of interventions and technologies.
The WordPress Developer will play a critical role in providing end-user training and guidance on website design, architecture and functionality. They will be a strong and collaborative communicator who works effectively across teams to build custom WordPress features and functionality using Advanced Custom Fields (ACF), PHP, code versioning and deployment tools.
Job Summary:
Responsible for both back-end and front-end development, including creating custom WordPress themes, plugins, new features and functionality. This position requires a combination of programming skills (such as PHP, HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript) and a good understanding of Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), PCI compliance, website performance and security.
Purpose and Key Functions:
- Lead, design and build the website front-end utilizing front-end technologies and frameworks such as HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, and jQuery.
- Convert comprehensive layout and wireframes into working HTML pages and HTML emails.
- Build user interfaces for websites and/or web applications
- Design and develop effective responsive design websites.
- Lead the complex PHP back-end development utilizing various computing and scripting languages, as well as software such as RESTful API and formats such as JSON and XML
- Facilitate and manage the website back-end integration of databases and servers.
- Implement code versioning and deployment tools.
- Create, design and generate WordPress custom themes, features and plugins.
- Convert comprehensive HTML layouts into custom post types.
- Build and reference advanced custom field (ACF) groups into WordPress features and functionality
- Meet with clients to discuss and provide guidance on website design, website architecture, functions.
- Interpret complex functionality requirements and develop into functional code.
- Facilitate technical WordPress training for clients and develop technical supporting and training materials.
- Ensure accessibility compliance (AODA) as part of the audit process and establish improvements in regards to web accessibility.
- Ensure PCI compliance, WordPress security, and website performance following best practices for auditing and implementing improvements
- Troubleshoot content issues and technical bugs.
- Inspect HTML and debug issues using tools such as Firebug, and Chrome Web Inspector.
- Ensure high-performance and manage all technical aspects of the WordPress.
- Remain current with frequent changes with web technologies and trends.
Supervision:
- Provides direction to others in how to carry out work tasks.
- Occasionally provides orientation and shows procedures to others.
- May assign work to external consultants and temporary staff.
Requirements:
- 3 year Community College diploma in Information Technology, Computer Science or related field.
- Requires 5 years of relevant experience.
Additional Information:
The successful candidate will have the following:
- A combination of programming skills such as (PHP, HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, JQuery, MySQL, RESTful API, JSON, XML).
- Knowledge of responsive web design, search engine optimization (SEO) principles, as well as website performance and security.
- Understanding of Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and web accessibility standards including WCAG 2.0/2.1, WAI-ARIA.
- Passion for web development, design and be able to convert comprehensive layouts, wireframes and front-end code to functioning WordPress backend.
- Experience in user testing, graphic/web design including strong knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud and multilingual websites.
- Excellent attention to detail and project management.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize content, and manage time autonomously.
- Experience developing and maintaining website documentation
- Experience updating and integrating multiple web interfaces, including custom web applications and interactive data dashboards (e.g. Power BI, Looker Studio, etc.)
