Job description
The Solicitor provides timely and effective legal advice and services to staff and municipal partners on a wide range of issues. The Solicitor has carriage of all manner of litigation, including Court, Arbitration and Tribunal work. The Solicitor handles other legal work as assigned.
Essential responsibilities
- Demonstrate Chatham-Kent’s core values and competencies
- Draft and review contracts and other legal documents
- Assist with the preparation of reports for Council, Committees of Council and Senior Municipal Administration
- Represent the Municipality in all manner of labour and employment law, with a particular focus on providing legal advice and representation in labour arbitration grievances
- Provide timely and effective legal advice and services to staff and municipal partners on a wide range of issues
- Assist with negotiating the terms of any settlement agreements respecting disputes as required
- Attend court and tribunals, and take carriage of all types of litigation files, such as personal injury and corporate litigation
- Perform real estate transactions
Essential qualifications
- A university law degree (LL.B. or J.D.) from a Canadian university or equivalent; with a minimum of two (2) years of legal experience in a private law firm or municipal (or other government) legal department
- Law experience working in an environment governed by legislation and legislative rules and regulations, preferably in a private law firm or municipal government environment
- Experience with court procedures in Ontario Courts and Tribunals, and knowledge of law enforcement procedures
- Ability to conduct legal research using electronic resources
- Experience in preparing legal memorandum
- Experience performing real estate transactions
- Possess a solid understanding of municipal law, contract law, planning law, personal injury/tort, real estate and labour law
- Experience administering operating budget
- Ability to interact with various stakeholders, including the legal profession, enforcement agencies, other government ministries and departments and the general public
- Familiarity with computer based research systems, working knowledge of electronic legal research systems, and land registration systems
- Excellent communication skills, verbal and written
- Strong computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email and internet (or other similar software programs)
Other qualifications
- Labour grievance arbitration experience an asset
Certifications, memberships, licenses
- Current member in good standing of the Law Society of Upper Canada
Work environment/hours of work
- This position works indoors
- This position works weekday hours, with occasional evening and weekend hours, as well as on-call after hours and on weekends
Working Remotely
This position has been approved for remote working, at the discretion of the supervisor based on the Working Remotely Policy.
This position may be required to attend on-site meetings in order to complete essential responsibilities of the role. As per the Working Remotely Policy, employees scheduled to work remotely on a certain day may occasionally be called to a municipal onsite work location on short notice. Employees must remain flexible to accommodate municipal requirements and be prepared to be called in on short notice.
Driver’s license/vehicle requirements
Because this position would be required to travel, a valid Province of Ontario driver's license with a reliable motor vehicle is necessary.
Background check requirements
The successful candidate will be required to furnish an original Police Information Search (criminal reference check) prior to commencement of employment.

- Sitting: frequent sitting in a chair
- Reaching: infrequent reaching above shoulder, backward; occasional reaching below shoulder, forward, handling
- Hands: frequent fine finger dexterity (movement), mousing
Benefits
This permanent full-time position has an annual salary of $127,776 to $150,663 and will receive benefits including: participation in the OMERS pension plan (mandatory) as well as sick and vacation entitlements. Following successful completion of a 3-month waiting period, candidates will also be entitled to a comprehensive group benefits package.
