Job Description POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY: The role is responsible for performing janitorial duties and ensuring The Salvation Army Belleville Ministries and facilities are maintained in a healthy, safe, and sanitary manner in compliance with applicable standards.
Accountabilities: Custodian (80%) Service Responsibilities – CFS & Citadel
- Responsible for any combination of light cleaning duties to maintain defined work areas at the Citadel and CFS properties.
- Ensure the weekly upkeep of the facilities i.e., empty all garbage receptacles, put garbage out for designated garbage day and return recycling and composite bins when emptied.
- Vacuum all carpeted areas, sweep all tiled areas, wash floors and baseboards in tiled areas, clean all glass areas; windows and ledges etc. using a ladder where/when needed, dust all offices and furnishings.
- Always ensure kitchen cleanliness, clean and polish sinks, toilets and counter tops, mirrors, and fixtures; clean washrooms (toilets, sinks, floors), restock washrooms and hand sanitizers, and distribute received material as required.
- Wipe down all tables, chairs, and door handles,
- checks, cleans, moves, arranges, and dusts furniture as required.
- Identify/report to supervisor any repairs that may require an external service provider.
- Check doors and windows to ensure building security.
- Monitor and maintain stock of regularly used items, i.e., mops, brooms, lights, supplies etc., and order/purchases as required.
- Perform minor repairs such as electrical (change light bulbs) and plumbing (unblocking toilets, troubleshooting flushing issues), reports safety concerns and major repair issues to supervisor.
- Spot wash accessible walls, strip and wax floors, spot cleaning, and shampoo carpets as required.
- Ensure the general upkeep of external property, keeping sidewalks and entrances clear of snow and ice, including salting, litter pick up and up-keep of storage shed.
- Lawn care at CFS location.
Accountabilities: food bank (20%) Service Responsibilities – Community & Family Services
- Maintain cleanliness of food bank, and organization of stock, by date and in appropriate locations; utilize FIFO food management.
- Assist with food drives if needed.
- Ensure that all clients are treated with dignity and respect.
- Ensure the safe and careful handling of all deliveries, donations etc. while protecting the property and donations.
- Assist with pick-up and delivery of food and donations from/to donors and clients using program vehicle.
- Record statistical data in a clear, organized, and accurate manner.
Health and Safety
- Monitor and maintain mixed cleaner bottles for custodial use. Ensure that all bottles contain WHMIS compliant labeling.
- Keep food bank area clean and safe by adhering to all health and safety standards recommended by Public Health etc.
- Contribute to the overall safety of staff, volunteers, donors, clients, and guests (e.g., clear fire exits, cleans spillage; no obstacles inside/outside the buildings)
- Use personal prescribed safety equipment and clothing as directed by the employer.
- Report any workplace hazards, dangers, safety issues, injuries, or illness’ immediately and ensure care is taken with all equipment and property.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
- This is a temporary full-time position based on 27.5 hours per week performing custodial duties and 10hrs per week at the food bank.
- Ability to lift/move up to 40 pounds.
- Work environment is typically at the citadel and warehouse in generally agreeable conditions.
- The performance of the job requires operating industrial cleaning equipment and tools, mopping/sweeping, reaching, bending, twisting, lifting, occasional ladder work and fine motor skills.
- Requires moderate to high attention when handling hazardous chemicals and using non-motorized/general cleaning equipment.
- Your supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule.

- Completion of Secondary School
- Safe Food Handlers Certification is an asset.
Experience And Knowledge
- Minimum of one (1) year of prior related experience including life skills, custodial, and general familiarity with cleaning and maintenance procedures and equipment.
- Experience working in a food bank would be an asset.
- Minimum of three (3) months of prior related experience working in community-based programs, including experience working with multi-barriered persons.
- Knowledge of Health & Safety Standards.

Compensation The target hiring range for this position is $17.60 to $18.76 with a maximum of $22.51.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
