Position Summary Reporting to the Manager of Professional Practice, the Advanced Practice Nurse Educator (APNE) is an integral member of the interdisciplinary leadership team, and demonstrates core competencies essential to developing and sustaining the academic practice environment at UHN.

The APNE aligned with the Medical-Surgical Intensive Care Unit (MSICU), is part of the Critical Care Leadership team and the Practice-Based Education team within the Collaborative Academic Practice Portfolio. This role focuses on enhancing patient care through evidence-based practice, clinical consultation, and identifying and addressing gaps in care delivery.

The APNE is expected to demonstrate core competencies essential for advancing best practices at the point of care. They will collaborate with unit managers, fellow educators, and other stakeholders to support practice-based initiatives and clinical care projects.

Duties

  • Design and deliver tailored staff education
  • Promote professional development, and mentor nurses for career growth
  • Collaborate with teams across UHN and the academic community on clinical and educational initiatives
  • Participate in committees, and share best practices
  • Lead program evaluation, implement innovative education strategies, and support and lead quality improvement initiatives
  • Drive nursing visibility and change management efforts, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations
  • Participate and lead corporate initiatives and teaching

Qualifications

  • Must be registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario and able to practice without restrictions
  • Completion of Critical Care Nursing Certificate Program is required
  • Minimum of 5 years working in relevant Critical Care setting is required
  • Completion of a graduate degree program in Nursing or Education or recognized equivalent is required
  • Completion of a Basic Life Support (BLS) program required upon hire, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
  • Current membership in RNAO (Registered Nurses Association of Ontario)
  • Current membership in a related professional interest group or association
  • Theoretical and practical experience in adult education and other relevant educational frameworks, including educational program planning, development, and evaluation
  • Previous experience as an Educator considered preferred
  • Excellent leadership, time management, facilitation skills
  • Interprets, communicates and disseminates research findings to support patient care and recommends evidence-based policy and practice change
  • Ability to be adaptable, build trust, provide coaching and collaboration, facilitate change and promote continuous improvement
  • Demonstrate ability to motivate staff and create an environment conducive to learning and team building
  • Able to work effectively as a member of and/or lead an inter-professional team
  • Able to effectively use information technology
  • Ability to meet multiple and competing deadlines
