About the role

Kamloops Aboriginal Friendship Society (KAFS) is an Indigenous service delivery agency located in Kamloops, BC. Our team currently has 30 staff offering comprehensive services to the community from infancy to golden age in Kamloops for over 50 years.

All our programs are embedded in culture. We find that many of our clients are looking for this and appreciate cultural practices such as smudging and drumming that happen on a regular basis. We are governed by a volunteer board and bylaws. Each year we hold annual general meetings and present an audited statement to the membership and our funders.

THE OPPORTUNITY:

Reporting to the Family Violence Prevention Manager, and as part of the Family Violence Prevention (FVP) team, the Violence Prevention Facilitator delivers group-based learning, cultural programming, and one-on-one support for individuals and families impacted by violence. Rooted in a trauma-informed and culturally grounded approach, this role focuses on breaking cycles of harm, promoting relational healing, and supporting the wellness of the whole community.

This position requires strong facilitation skills, collaborative practice, and deep community engagement. Key responsibilities include coordinating cultural programming, delivering public education, advocating with stakeholders, and ensuring connection to holistic, wraparound supports. The ideal candidate will demonstrate deep respect, model grounded and respectful behaviour, and show a strong commitment to wellness and healing.

A DAY IN THE LIFE – ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Deliver and coordinate culturally grounded, trauma-informed community programs aligned with KAFS goals that support healing, empowerment, and wellness.
  • Facilitate safe, inclusive, and respectful group sessions, workshops, and cultural activities that honor worldviews, teachings, and community values, including sessions on intimate partner violence, intergenerational trauma, healthy communication, self-regulation, and boundary-setting.
  • Clearly communicate complex and sensitive topics in accessible language for diverse audiences.
  • Advocate for awareness of systemic, institutional, and personal barriers faced by women and 2SLGBTQ+ community members in accessing support and services.
  • Support participants in creating, implementing, and expanding personalized decolonization plans that incorporate advocacy, one-on-one support, cultural and land-based healing, housing, and understanding of violence and abuse, offering guidance and goal-setting tools over time.
  • Build and maintain trusting relationships with participants, families, Elders, community members, and partner organizations to promote collaboration and holistic support.
  • Provide referrals, guidance, and advocacy that prioritize cultural safety and trauma-informed care, ensuring access to wraparound services addressing violence, addictions, housing, and wellness.
  • Maintain thorough, confidential client records, session notes, and program documentation in line with organizational and ethical standards.
  • Collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative data to inform program evaluation, reporting, and continuous improvement, integrating client and community feedback.
  • Collaborate closely with internal teams, including Family Violence Prevention caseworkers, participating in planning, meetings, training, and cultural competency efforts to ensure coordinated service delivery.
  • Assist in developing funding proposals and program strategies by providing relevant data, outcomes, and community needs insights.
  • Promote accessible and responsive service delivery by recognizing systemic barriers and diverse needs within the community.
  • Lead and engage in community awareness campaigns and educational outreach to enhance understanding of gender-based violence, trauma, and decolonizing practices among service providers and the public.
  • Plan and facilitate healing and cultural activities, including ceremonies, land-based experiences, and mentorship programs that foster cultural connection and identity.
  • Participate regularly in professional development to strengthen facilitation skills, trauma-informed practices, decolonizing approaches, and awareness of evolving best practices and community needs.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary education in social work, Indigenous studies, community development, public health, or a related human services field; an equivalent combination of relevant education and lived/professional experience will be considered.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience delivering culturally grounded and trauma-informed programming, services, or community-based initiatives.
  • Strong knowledge of gender-based violence, intergenerational trauma, healing practices, and strengths-based approaches within Indigenous contexts.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and facilitate community programs, group sessions, and cultural activities in a respectful, inclusive, and trauma-aware manner.
  • Proven experience building and maintaining strong relationships with individuals, families, Elders, and community partners, rooted in trust, cultural humility, and accountability.
  • Skilled in providing culturally safe referrals, advocacy, and support related to wellness, housing, addictions, family violence, and community services.
  • Competence in accurate, ethical documentation, including client records, case notes, reports, and data tracking.
  • Experience contributing to program evaluation, reporting, and continuous improvement using both qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Collaborative team player with the ability to contribute meaningfully to planning, strategy, and interdisciplinary coordination.
  • Familiarity with Indigenous protocols, ceremonies, and land-based healing practices, and a demonstrated commitment to cultural safety and decolonizing approaches.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector)

WORKING SCHEDULE:

  • Monday to Friday
  • Hours: 8:30am to 4:30pm, with some flexibility required to work evenings and weekends as per business needs.
