About the role

Job Description The ILS Training Specialist III (Instructional Systems Designer) is responsible for analyzing, designing, and developing engaging and innovative training solutions for technical and non-technical audiences within a defence/shipbuilding environment. Working closely with the ILS Training Manager, cross-functional teams, and stakeholders, the incumbent ensures training materials align with project requirements, regulatory standards, and organizational goals. This role involves conducting front end analysis, designing and developing instructional materials, and supporting the continuous improvement of training programs.

Note: This position qualifies for an optional hybrid work schedule after 90 days of onsite work and onboarding. Employee will be subject to the terms of the Flexible Work Policy Agreement. What You’ll Do

  • Perform comprehensive job and task analysis to identify essential duties, Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes (KSAs), and assess performance gaps to develop a Training Needs Analysis (TNA).
  • Design and develop comprehensive training programs and curricula for maritime systems, incorporating adult learning principles and instructional design best practices.
  • Create engaging instructional materials, manuals, e-learning modules, and practical exercises in line with defence and industry standards.
  • Collaborate with the ILS team to translate logistics support requirements into actionable training content.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams (Engineering, PMO, and other internal departments) to identify training needs and validate content effectiveness.
  • Ensure all training materials and activities comply with relevant client regulations, certification standards, and company/customer quality management systems.
  • Identify and implement innovative instructional technologies and methodologies to enhance learning outcomes.
  • Evaluate training effectiveness through feedback, assessments, and performance metrics, making continuous improvements as needed.
  • Support external vendors for specialized training development, ensuring alignment with internal standards and quality expectations.
  • Stay current with emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in training, adult learning, and defence/shipbuilding standards.
  • Provide support to the ILS Project Managers by attending meetings, offering technical advice, and contributing to training-related initiatives.
  • Contribute to the development, documentation, and enforcement of training standards and processes.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation, timelines, and progress reports to ensure training deliverables meet schedule and quality standards.
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders to provide updates, gather feedback, and ensure alignment with project objectives.
  • Assist in estimating training development costs and resource requirements for project planning.
  • Perform additional duties as required by the ILS Training Manager.

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, Instructional Design, Human Performance Technology, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in developing and delivering training programs, preferably within a defence, maritime, or heavy engineering environment.
  • Experience in eLearning content creation and instructional design using modern tools and methodologies.
  • Familiarity with defence/shipbuilding industry standards and Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) frameworks is an asset.
  • Strong grasp of adult learning principles, curriculum design, and the ADDIE model.
  • Proficient with Learning Content Management Systems (LCMS) and eLearning content creation tools such as Articulate 360, Adobe Captivate, iSpring Suite, Moodle, Canvas, or OnCourse.
  • Ability to design and deploy blended learning solutions (classroom, e-learning, on-the-job training).
  • Working knowledge of shipbuilding processes, naval systems, or engineering concepts is an asset.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to plan, prioritize, and oversee multiple projects within strict deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for developing instructional materials and facilitating workshops.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively and manage stakeholder expectations.
  • Analytical skills to interpret training metrics and performance data for continuous improvement.
  • Proactive approach to identifying training gaps, proposing solutions, and driving implementation.
  • Commitment to upholding safety and compliance with defence regulations and company policies.
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain an appropriate security clearance as per contract requirements.
  • Willingness to travel domestically, as required, to support training initiatives across multiple sites.

The estimated salary for this position is $99,000 - $121,000. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate’s skills and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
