Located in Toronto, the Art Gallery of Ontario is one of the largest art museums in North America, attracting approximately one million visitors annually. The AGO Collection of more than 120,000 works of art ranges from cutting-edge contemporary art to significant works by Indigenous and Canadian artists and European masterpieces.

We are currently seeking a Graphic Design Assistant to join our Creative Studio team. Under the direction of the Sr. Manager, Creative Studio, the incumbent will work on-site at the AGO as part of a nimble and fast-paced Creative Team, apply proficient design and technical skills to support the execution of Marketing Campaigns, Exhibition and Environmental graphics.

What is this position responsible for?

  • Collaborate with creative team and partner colleagues to understand project requirements & schedule, and deliverable needs.
  • Working from approved Marketing design concepts, roll out deliverables for print and digital media campaigns, onsite signage and vinyl graphics. Track approvals and make revisions as needed to achieve final assets.
  • Working from established Exhibition graphic standards, produce layouts for exhibition labels and other visitor info. Make edits to layouts as needed to resolve final approvals.
  • Working from established AGO templates, produce layouts for various applications such for: Retail Shop, Bistro, wayfinding and signage, and other work that supports departments across the AGO.
  • In consultation with creative team, make necessary adjustments to resolve designs for various assets and formats.
  • Ensure all work adheres to AGO Brand standards maintaining consistent use of font, colour, and other visual elements. Ensure graphics adhere to accessibility (AODA) standards and best practices for a positive visitor and online experience. This pertains to such issues as font usage, visibility/legibility contrast, viewing distance, etc.
  • Prepare files for production and trafficking, ensuring they meet quality, accuracy, and required specifications. Identify and resolve technical issues with production files and process.
  • Following established priorities, manage multiple large and small tasks effectively, considering impacts to project workflow and schedules. Flag to appropriate team member any risk to delivery.
  • Maintain communication with creative team and other colleagues across the AGO as related to project work.
  • Assist in compiling presentation decks for stakeholder approvals.
  • Maintain awareness of design and marketing trends and keep up to date on industry standards in technology and software.
  • Performs other duties and projects as assigned.

What are we looking for?

  • Understanding of design requirements for various marketing platforms, both traditional and digital.
  • Demonstrated experience producing assets for marketing campaigns; digital and analogue formats.
  • Formal training in Graphic Design with a refined eye for design and typography.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite: Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and After- Effects. Familiarity with MS Office suite, video editing and project management software.
  • 1-2 years’ experience in a similar role.
  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills.
