About the Role
The Climbing Instructor is a member of Cougars Athletics and Recreation which actively creates, promotes, and sustains an environment in which the Mount Royal University community is challenged and supported in pursuit of personal growth in sport and leisure.
Reporting the Adventure Programming Supervisor, the Climbing Instructor is part of the programs and services team. The team is driven by their why: to inspire people to move so that they can be the best versions of themselves. The Climbing Instructor is responsible for providing climbing skills-based teaching during MRU Climbing Centre programs and private bookings. The ability to effectively manage risks inherent to climbing and attention to detail are integral to success in this position, as well as a passion for teaching a variety of demographics and facilitating a positive learning environment.
Responsibilities
Climbing Instruction (65%)
- Teach and coach technical climbing skills, including: top rope and lead climbing and belaying, equipment use, rappelling, climbing movement, and physical training
Customer Experience (15%)
- Welcome participants into the facility and highlight key policies & procedures
- Distribute rental equipment and ensure it is returned and put away
Risk Management (15%)
- Actively supervise learners ensuring that all climbers and belayers are safe
- Provide coaching and corrective instruction on techniques as necessary
Accessibility and Inclusion (5%)

Ensure programs and services are developed and executed with accommodation for access needs

Ensure people with varying abilities and circumstances feel a sense of belonging in recreation programs and services
Qualifications

High School Diploma or Equivalent
-
Standard First Aid & CPR-C certification

18-14 months experience in a climbing facility, camp setting, or equivalent.

Advanced understanding of climbing techniques and terminology

Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG) Level 1 Climbing Gym Instructor and/or Top Rope Climbing Instructor certification(s) or Equivalent
Salary: $24.81 - $31.38 per hour
