The Peer Specialist draws on their own skills and experiences as a consumer of Mental Health Services and with personal experience and insight into the impacts of gender-based violence to provide peer-based support, advocacy and non-clinical counselling services to clients of the Community Mental Health Program. The Peer Specialist functions as a member of an interdisciplinary team that provides services to clients who have experienced gender-based violence (GBV) enabling them to maintain a level of optimal functioning and to achieve their vocational goals.
REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum two (2) year Post Secondary School Diploma in Social Service Work

Minimum two (2) years of experience working in a mental health program
-
Personal experience and insight into the impacts of gender-based violence, with the ability to draw on this experience in a supportive, non-judgmental and empowering way.

Previous experience working in a counseling capacity or in a community mental health program setting or related field(s)

Previous experience working with Community Advisory Committees and volunteers
-
Previous experience in a team oriented environment
-
Experience living and/or working in the Mental Health System or with individuals who have experienced gender-based violence
-
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
-
Demonstrated knowledge of community of Renfrew County and issues concerning individuals living with serious mental illness and gender-based violence.

Demonstrated computer software application skills

Ability to function with groups of clients as well as individuals
-
Proven ability to effectively provide service to a difficult to serve population

Valid Class G Driver’s License
-
Access to a reliable vehicle with minimum $2,000,000.00 liability insurance to transport self and clients throughout Renfrew County

Clear Criminal Record Check

Must have demonstrated ability to meet the attendance standards of the Hospital
