About the role

Position Summary Looking for a Physician Assistant (PA) to join our Quinte Health Team. The PA will support the Trenton Memorial Hospital Emergency Department by providing patient assessment and interventions under the supervision and direction of the Emergency Physician. The PA will possess the skills, knowledge and experience to work effectively as a part of the Interdisciplinary Team in the Emergency Department. The PA will be involved in and contribute to quality improvement processes, data tracking, and professional development activities. The goal of the PA role in the Emergency Department is to help provide timely access to care and promote quality outcomes for our patients. The PA will report to the Emergency Department Patient Services Manager.

The Quinte Health Trenton Memorial Hospital Emergency Department is operational 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year. The shift schedule for the PA will be determined based on the needs of the ED with a goal of optimizing the hours that are typically high volume, including later morning to evening and every other weekend are expected. There will be flexibility with respect to the shift schedule for the successful candidate. Not only is the Trenton Emergency Department a dynamic learning environment, it is a highly functioning team. Required

  • A Bachelor or Master's Degree in Physician Assistant studies.
  • Canadian Association of Physician Assistants (CAPA) Certificate of Registration in good standing or eligibility.
  • Registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) in good standing or eligibility
  • Current CPR or BCLS certificate.
  • Minimum of 1 year of Clinical experience in critical care, Medical/Surgical area
  • Demonstrated ability to support and coach staff in the accomplishment of department goals and initiatives.
  • Ability to perform all specialized functions in the relative clinical service area (i.e. Delegated Medical Acts).

Preferred

  • Recent Clinical experience in hospital setting, emergency, critical care, or Medical/Surgical area or Military experience in PA role
  • CAPA Interest Group relative to area of work
  • Ability to perform all specialized functions in the relative clinical service area (i.e. Delegated Medical Acts). Training and Education will be provided if no previous experience.

Duties

  • Supports the physician as an extension of the supervising physician within the physician patient relationship as guided by the supervising physician, performing controlled acts delegated by supervising physician,
  • Performs complete and appropriate clinical assessment along with documentation,
  • Formulates clinical treatment plans,
  • Uses preventative and therapeutic interventions effectively to meet needs of patients,
  • Ensures that members of the health care team and patients are aware of his/her status of Physician Assistant while providing services,
  • Provides leadership, in collaboration with the manager to the patient care team to ensure patient/family focused care within a coordinated integrated care planning model of care,
  • Acts as a resource to the team through clinical expertise and knowledge base related to the medical/clinical needs of patients. Incorporates evidence based practice to support clinical decision making,
  • Assists in day to day problem solving within and across the services, in collaboration with the team,
  • Ensures he/she has the necessary knowledge, skill and judgment to perform any act that has been delegated,
  • Assists the team to develop continuous quality improvement, utilization management and risk management activities, including implementation of standards and tracking mechanisms, in collaboration with the manager,
  • Provides guidance and direction to coordinate discharge planning and promote patient flow,
  • Develops rapport, trust, and ethical therapeutic relationships with patients, families, and members of the inter-professional team. Promotes and maintains good interdepartmental relationships,
  • Provides and promotes support to student clinical placement assigned to the area along with assisting in the orientation/mentoring of new staff,
  • Performs other duties as assigned from time to time.
