About the role

ICTC is seeking a Data Engineer to join our dynamic research and labour market intelligence team. The successful candidate will play a key role in developing, managing, and optimizing ICTC’s cloud-based data infrastructure. This role is integral to ensuring that ICTC continues to deliver high-quality data insights and innovative digital solutions that shape Canada’s digital economy.

Working closely with economists and researchers, the Data Engineer will support the ingestion, transformation, and integration of large and diverse datasets. The candidate will leverage their technical expertise to link disparate data sources, implement metadata schemas, and contribute to ICTC’s growing data science and analytics portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the development, optimization, and maintenance of ICTC’s cloud-based data infrastructure.

  • Collaborate with internal and external experts to design and implement data management pathways for ingesting and transforming large-scale data from public, private, and bespoke sources.

  • Create innovative solutions to link and harmonize disparate datasets.

  • Build, clean, and organize datasets for analysis, visualization, and dissemination to stakeholders.

  • Assist ICTC economists and researchers by providing data-driven insights and supporting empirical research projects.

  • Implement metadata schemas that ensure consistency, scalability, and usability across ICTC data products.

  • Recommend and apply improvements to research tools, methodologies, and processes that advance ICTC’s data capabilities.

  • Play a key role in advancing ICTC’s data strategy by harmonizing disparate datasets, designing intuitive dashboards, and developing innovative data concepts.

  • Advise on best practices for data integration and visualization, and empower decision-makers with the insights needed to shape Canada’s digital future.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, Data Science, or a related field. Equivalent combinations of education and work experience will be considered.

  • Experience with cloud computing environments (GCP, AWS, or Azure).

  • Strong programming skills in SQL, Git, and Python (or R).

  • Familiarity with forecasting, predictive analytics, and statistical modelling.

  • Knowledge of data ingestion, transformation, and metadata integration practices.

  • Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work independently and manage priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to align with cross-functional teams and deliver results.

Assets:

  • Bilingualism (English/French).

  • Knowledge of labour economics, workforce development, or labour market policy in Canada.

  • Experience developing and maintaining cloud-based data pipelines and resources.

  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.
