About the role
Role
Reporting to the Commissioning Manager, the Commissioning Technologist Student will be an integral part of the Commissioning team, gaining hands-on experience in the field with primary and secondary power equipment. You will assist in commissioning and testing equipment and learn how medium- to high-voltage substation power delivery systems operate, including breakers, switchgear, relays, transformers, and more. You will be paired with a senior team member who will mentor you and provide exposure to many different aspects of the industry, helping you build practical skills and a strong foundation for your future career.
What You’ll Do:
In this role, you’ll gain exposure to a variety of activities related to medium- and high-voltage power systems, including:

Working safely alongside all members of the construction and commissioning team

Assisting with testing and maintenance of electrical equipment

Supporting the installation, commissioning, and maintenance of protection and control equipment in transmission substations

Learning to read blueprints, analyze test reports, and identify potential improvements
-
Working with high-voltage equipment such as circuit breakers, transformers, switches, and control circuits for protection and monitoring systems

Calibrating electronic equipment and instruments as needed

Using industry-standard test equipment, including:
-
TTR (Transformer Turns Ratio) testers
-
Omicron secondary test sets
-
Winding resistance testers
-
Omicron CPC 100
-
CT saturators
What You’ll Learn:
- Hands-on experience with substation commissioning and electrical testing
- Industry standards and safety practices for medium- and high-voltage systems
- How to work with and interpret technical drawings and reports
- Practical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
Requirements
Who We’re Looking For:
- Currently enrolled in a relevant post-secondary program (Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology, Power Systems, or similar)
- Strong interest in learning about electrical power systems
- Comfortable working in a team environment and following safety procedures
- Detail-oriented with good communication skills
- Eager to learn and take guidance from senior team members
- Able to work out of town on a shift rotation (e.g. 4 and 3, 8 and 6, etc.)
- Willing to take a drug and alcohol test according to local laws
