NOTE: This posting represents a maternity leave replacement until April 2027. This position is a full-time seasonal position starting February 4, 2026 to May 1, 2026 and resuming August 17, 2026 to April 30, 2027.
SCOPE
Reporting to the Supervisor, Academic and Research Facilities, Faculty of Fine Arts, the incumbent is responsible for helping students in the design and structural realization of their projects and ensuring that they know how to operate tools and machinery. The incumbent also performs routine maintenance and will instruct users on the use of a variety of equipment. They will work closely with other Core Technical Center (CTC) staff to ensure continuity of processes and smooth operations.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Support students in the realization of their projects. Advise them on chronology and techniques to follow for the realization of their projects.
• In consultation with other members of the CTC technical team, supervise the operation of CTC facilities.
• Ensure equipment is functional and that supplies are available when required.
• Establish, maintain and enforce all relevant health & safety standards within the shop
• Help perform, document, and update a risk assessment of the shop’s equipment, facilities, and processes.
• Maintain an inventory of the stock of materials. Research pricing, establish vendor contacts, and process all approved capital and operating budget expenditures.
• Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot machinery, tools, and related instruments. Make recommendations for new purchases and equipment upgrades.
• Instruct students, staff, and faculty on the use of specialized equipment.
• Functionally supervises and is involved in the recruitment & selection of all temporary technicians, casual and student assistant staff.
• Participate in new and ongoing minor and/or major renovations and refurbishment projects with the core technical center.
• Perform other duties as required by the supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Diploma of Collegial Studies (three year technical DEC) and four years of relevant experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent and two years of associated experience.
• Flexible schedule with ability to work evenings.
• Proficiency in all relevant wood shop equipment.
• Excellent working knowledge of woodworking techniques.
• Ability to interpret technical drawings.
• Working knowledge of laboratory health and safety regulations and WHMIS.
• Maintains WHIMIS certification throughout employment.
• Excellent organization & interpersonal skills.
• Good spoken and written English (level 4) in order to assist/instruct and to write experimental procedures and instructions. Basic spoken French (level 3) in order to provide basic information to students.
• Will require use of respiratory protection and enrollment in the university’s Respiratory Protection Program.
• Will require use of hearing protection and enrollment in the university’s Hearing Conservation Program.
• Have physical ability to occasionally lift/carry/move without assistance up to 23 kg (50 lbs.) and with assistance up to 34 kg (75 lbs.).
