Business Development Lead (Part-Time Consultant) Location: Alberta (remote/hybrid) Type of Engagement: Independent Contractor
Engagement Overview
BioAlberta is a non-profit industry association supporting Alberta’s life sciences sector, including biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and digital health, and Biomass utilization. The organization advances sector growth through advocacy, industry programming, and strategic partnerships, with revenue generated through memberships and event sponsorships.
BioAlberta is seeking an experienced Business Development Consultant to support revenue growth through targeted lead development and closure in both life sciences and non-traditional corporate sectors.
This role will focus on building a high-quality pipeline of prospective members and sponsors and delivering revenue opportunities to support BioAlberta’s business objectives. This is a flexible, part-time consulting engagement suited to a senior business development professional with strong industry connections and a proven ability to independently generate opportunities.
Scope of Work
- Lead Generation & Market Development
- Identify and proactively source prospective:
- Individual and corporate members Event sponsors and strategic partners
- Build and maintain a consistent pipeline aligned with revenue priorities Leverage personal networks, industry intelligence, and digital channels (e.g., LinkedIn) to identify opportunities
- Lead Qualification & Early Engagement
- Conduct outreach to assess prospect interest, fit, and timing Qualify leads based on agreed-upon criteria (e.g., strategic alignment, budget potential, level of engagement) Clearly articulate BioAlberta’s value proposition to prospective stakeholders
- Relationship Development
- Establish early-stage relationships with key decision-makers in the life sciences ecosystem Build awareness of BioAlberta and its membership and sponsorship offerings Maintain ongoing engagement with prospects to nurture pipeline progression
- Opportunity Development
- Close opportunities, soliciting BioAlberta leadership and resources as needed
- Advise on messaging, positioning, and outreach strategies
- Provide market insights and feedback from prospective members and sponsors
- Reporting & Pipeline Management
- Track all activities, leads, and status updates using agreed tools (CRM or spreadsheet) Provide regular reporting on:
- Lead generation activity Pipeline status and health Estimated value of opportunities Deliverables and Key Performance Indicators Monthly pipeline report (Maximizer CRM) including:
- New leads generated Qualified opportunities Estimated revenue potential (membership and sponsorship)
- Documented outreach activity and engagement status
- Ongoing contribution to strengthening BioAlberta’s business development approach
KPIs (to be developed in collaboration with the successful contractor)
- Revenue development to meet or exceed 2x cost in year one, growing to 3x in year two
- Volume and quality of qualified leads generated
- Strength and size of pipeline developed
- Conversion ratio of leads to paid memberships and sponsorships (in collaboration with BioAlberta)
Qualifications Experience
- 5+ years in business development, sales, partnerships, or related consulting roles
- Experience in life sciences, health innovation, or industry associations is strongly preferred
- Demonstrated success in generating and qualifying B2B opportunities
Capabilities
- Strong prospecting and outreach skills.
- Excellent relationship-building and communication abilities.
- Highly self-directed with the ability to operate independently
- Strategic mindset with a focus on high-value opportunities Familiarity with CRM tools and pipeline tracking
Engagement Structure
- Compensation: Base monthly retainer plus (option to include performance-based incentives tied to qualified leads or converted revenue)
- Time Commitment: Approximately 2–3 days per week
- Term: Three-month initial contract, with potential for renewal based on performance and organizational needs
