Job Description:
POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:
This position provides a service to clients by maintaining the mobile kitchen/soup van at a high standard of cleanliness daily, while interacting in a positive, supportive manner. The role contributes to the broader mission and values of The Salvation Army, upholding standards of service that reflect its spiritual and social commitment to the community.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Incumbents may perform all, some, or similar range of duties as below.
- Operate and maintain the Soup Van, including loading prepared meals and ensuring safe food handling during delivery.
- Provide general pastoral care, related interviews and making referrals to internal and community resources as needed.
- Drive to designated locations and distribute meals and material assistance (e.g., clothing) to clients and families in accordance with guidelines.
- Build and maintain referral networks with service providers and other Salvation Army departments.
- Support volunteers during service delivery to ensure respectful and efficient operations as directed by the supervisor.
- Complete and submit reports, including vehicle checks, incident logs, daily records, and statistics while ensuring confidentiality.
- Accurately count and document delivered items and submit required paperwork promptly.
- Maintain cleanliness of the vehicle, food storage areas, and equipment according to Public Health standards.
- Represent the organization in a respectful and professional manner, reflecting the mission and values of The Salvation Army.
- Other related duties as assigned.
CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT:
Internal: Ministry Unit leadership, staff, and volunteers.
External: general public, community organizations, clients of ministry unit in person.
MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reports directly to the Program Supervisor, Residential Services.
FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:
- Expected to exercise sound judgment in the use of organizational and personal resources. Uses or maintains organization assets in accordance with established guidelines
- May be authorized to handle small amounts of cash.
- Safe material handling and picking up/delivering pf food/clothing.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Working environment is in a distribution centre/MU, program vehicle, or outdoors delivering assistance to clients.
- May be exposed to various temperatures in outdoor conditions.
- The work requires frequent amount of sitting while concentrating on driving a vehicle.
- Some walking, bending, repetitive lifting, and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs is required.
- Ability to work a flexible work schedule is required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- A minimum of college diploma in Social Services.
- Valid full driver’s License for the province; an original copy of a current driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
- Certification in First Aid + CPR and Food Handler certificate.
- Experience and Knowledge Requirements:
- Possess knowledge of cleaning techniques, equipment & cleaning materials.
- An alternative level or combination of education and experience may be acceptable.
- Skills and Capabilities:
- Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
- Maturity and ability to exercise sound judgement.
- Strong conflict resolution skills.
- Proven ability to operate vehicles safely and in compliance with applicable regulations.
- High level of integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism, with sound judgment and balanced flexibility.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Consistently maintains a professional and service-focused demeanor with internal and external stakeholders.
- Excellent organizational, time management, and prioritization skills.
- Self-directed, reliable, and able to take initiative with minimal supervision.
- Exercise care and responsibility in handling Salvation Army property and assets.
- Demonstrated patience, understanding, and professionalism in all interactions.
