JOB OVERVIEW
Reporting to the Manager, Damage Prevention, the Utility Locate CAD Drafter i s responsible for producing accurate, construction-ready Utility Locate Sketches for Private Locates and Alternate Locate Provider (ALP) Locates.
This role works closely with field technicians and project teams to transform GPS field data, locate reports, and field notes into clear, consistent drawings using AutoCAD Civil 3D , while maintaining strict quality, safety, and documentation standards.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Import and manage GPS datasets (CSV, shapefiles, georeferenced files) into AutoCAD Civil 3D, ensuring correct coordinate systems and projections.

Generate Utility Locate Sketches that clearly represent locate markings, offsets, linework, and underground features using standardized layers, linetypes, legends, and symbology.

Create, manage, and edit Civil 3D points, point groups, and annotation styles to ensure drawing consistency and accuracy.

Interpret field notes, locate reports, maps, drawings, and survey control to ensure positional accuracy and traceable data lineage.

Perform QA/QC checks on coordinates, symbology, labels, northing/easting, scale, title blocks, and overall drawing quality.

Maintain organized, version-controlled CAD files and supporting documentation.

Collaborate with field technicians and project managers to resolve data gaps and confirm sketch completeness prior to delivery.

Adhere to all company health and safety policies, procedures, and documentation requirements.
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum 5 years of experience in underground line and/or facility locating.

Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D , including point management, coordinate systems, and styles.

Strong working knowledge of utility locating processes and underground infrastructure conventions.

Proven ability to read and interpret utility prints, as-built drawings, survey plans, and underground infrastructure records.

Experience operating underground locating equipment (EM/RF locators) used to assist in locating and verifying underground utilities.
-
Utility Advanced Line Locating Certification ( PAL, CAPULC, or equivalent ) considered an asset.

Knowledge of Trimble GPS and Total Station equipment considered an asset.

Current safety certifications including CSTS, OSSA/BSO, First Aid, and H2S Alive .

Ground Disturbance Training .

Strong computer skills with excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.

Ability to multi-task, meet tight deadlines, and work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.

Safety-focused, with the ability to handle stressful situations calmly and professionally.

Strong work ethic, proven reliability, and professionalism.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively within a team environment.

Proven ability to learn, take direction, and accept coaching and feedback.

Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean 5-year driver’s abstract.
WORK CONDITIONS

This position may involve field work year-round , requiring comfort working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.

The role may be physically demanding at times and requires an individual who is physically fit and able to safely perform field-related tasks.

Candidates must be eligible to permanently work in Canada , or presently have the required approvals to work permanently in Canada.
