About X Helping Hands Association
X Helping Hands is a federally incorporated nonprofit organization rooted in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, since 2022, and now active across the province. We support newcomers, racialized individuals, and diverse community members through storytelling, free skill-sharing, community engagement, and leadership opportunities.
Our mission is to build more welcoming, inclusive, and connected communities by creating spaces where people can learn from one another and make meaningful connections. Our work aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including Quality Education, Gender Equality, Reduced Inequalities, Decent Work, and Sustainable Communities.
About the Opportunities
We're looking for 2 passionate volunteers to join our Grants & Fundraising Team. You do not need previous nonprofit grant writing experience to apply. If you're interested in research, writing, fundraising, or creating community impact, we'd love to hear from you. We'll provide mentorship and support throughout your volunteer journey.
These opportunities are well suited for
Undergraduate/ college and graduate students Individuals interested in nonprofit management, public administration, communications, or community development. Anyone looking to gain practical experience in fundraising and grant development.
Current Openings
Grant Researcher (1 Position)
Approx. 3-5 hours per week Responsibilities include: Research grant opportunities that align with X Helping Hands' mission. Collaborate with the Director of Operations, Finance & Grants during the application process. Track eligibility requirements and application deadlines. Maintain and update our grants pipeline. Support the Grants Team with background research.
Grant Writer (1 Position)
Approx. 3-5 hours per week Responsibilities include: Draft grant applications and proposal narratives. Collaborate with the Director of Operations, Finance & Grants during the application process. Edit, proofread, and format submissions. Help strengthen proposals that support community programming.

We're looking for volunteers who are
Curious and eager to learn. Strong communicators. Organized and detail-oriented. Comfortable conducting research. Passionate about community impact and social change. Previous experience with grant writing is an asset, but not required.

A professional reference upon successful completion. A certificate recognizing your contribution. Volunteer hours for school, scholarships, or your résumé. Free admission to X Helping Hands events, including in-person gatherings (with meals, travel, accommodation, and event activities covered where applicable). Recognition on our social media platforms at the end of your volunteer term. An honorarium upon successful completion of the six-month term. Valuable experience that strengthens future applications for grants, nonprofit careers, and graduate studies.

Founded in 2022 at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, 'X Helping Hands' began as a grassroots initiative to support newcomers adjusting to life in rural communities. Over time, it has grown into a broader community-based initiative that uplifts newcomers, racialized individuals, and community members through connection, collaboration, and social impact.
At X Helping Hands, we believe in the power of shared experiences and collective action. Through storytelling, skill-sharing, and civic engagement, we create opportunities for individuals to connect, learn, and contribute meaningfully to their communities. Our storytelling projects amplify real voices and lived experiences, building empathy and understanding across cultures and identities.
Today, we are a federally incorporated NPO and our work aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), promoting inclusion, quality education, gender equality, decent work, and sustainable communities. From hosting community dialogues and cultural workshops to highlighting personal journeys of resilience and belonging, X Helping Hands strives to reduce isolation and strengthen social bonds.
What started as a local initiative in Antigonish has now extended its reach to Pictou County and other parts of Nova Scotia, connecting people from diverse backgrounds, especially BIPOC and community members from rural parts of the province, through acts of leadership, learning, and compassion.
Founded by Tavneet Kaur and co-founded by Bhavpreet Singh Arneja, X Helping Hands continues to evolve with the energy of community members, volunteers, and partners who share our vision of an inclusive, equitable, and connected Nova Scotia.
