Position: Transit Inspector
Location: Miller Transit Limited Conventional/BRT Division
Shift: Full Time – Weekday, Weekends, Holidays, Various shifts
Reporting to: Operations Manager
Start Date: To Be Determined
Salary Range: $65,000 to $69,000/annually
Job Overview: The role of the Transit Inspector is to ensure the highest level of safety, compliance and service quality on the streets and at major terminals during the full span of service. The Transit Inspector is responsible for field monitoring of revenue service vehicles to provide route management assistance for all YRT routes, comply with safety and regulatory compliance and reporting of operator and route performance.
Responsibilities: In the position of Transit Inspector your responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
- Monitor and provide route management assistance for all YRT services regardless of contractor or operating division.
- Provide high quality, customer service in the field, working together with all YRT service Inspectors.
- Maintain discipline and enforce compliance with company policy and procedures
- Abide by the Collective Agreement and good knowledge of same
- Communicate with drivers, customers, York Region and Dispatch/Control Centre
- Investigate emergency situations, accidents and driver and passenger complaints
- Responsible for conducting safety talks, ride and trail checks
- Responsible for accident investigation and reporting information and photos
- Assist spill cleanup and written report
- Required training to be able to cross train in Dispatch and Control Centre
- Act as a cover driver as required
- Assist Transit Drivers with route training
- Fare box repairs as required
- Prepare end of shift report with complete and concise information
- Maintain Inspector non-revenue vehicle in clean and tidy condition and reporting any damage to vehicle
- Required to know and learn all routes
- Remain on duty after normal shift, if required or emergency basis
- Other duties as required
Requirements: Successful candidates must possess:
- Successful completion of a post secondary degree or diploma
- Comprehensive and current knowledge and experience in accident investigation and reporting
- Must have emergency first aid and CPR training
- Must have a strong understanding of MTO procedures, policies, and Highway Traffic Act.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a supervisory capacity in the transit industry
- BZ driver’s license required in good standing with a clean abstract
- Knowledge of dispatch/Control Centre skills and tasks is preferred
- Must successfully complete a Vulnerable Sector Screening
- Strong English communication skills are required
- Strong knowledge of computers, applications and systems related to Microsoft Office (Microsoft Word, Excel etc.) and the ability to complete reports
- Strong and effective interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills; and the ability to be diplomatic, patient and courteous while providing a high level of customer service.
- Must be able to work shifts including split shifts, weekends, and holidays
- Must be able to work in various weather and traffic conditions
- Previous experience in a unionized environment would be preferred
- Excellent knowledge of geographic locations and vehicle routing opportunities within the YRT service area.
- Must be flexible, the ability to learn quickly in a fast-paced environment.
