About the role

Reporting to the Manager, LRV of Keolis Grand River (KGR), the Electro-Mechanical Technician will perform certain tasks within Preventive maintenance inspections, repairs . The Operations team is dedicated to all aspects of transit logistics and operational output of the Region of Waterloo’s successful ION Light Rail Transit (LRT) system - delivery of service levels, and customer experience.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Determine proper operation, and the extent of wear and/or damage to LRV equipment

  • Performing emergency repair work on rail vehicles in the shop, yard or main service line

    and involves responding to emergency calls either by riding the trains, or by driving to the scene in an emergency truck; inspecting, troubleshooting and, if possible, correcting/isolating problems while vehicles are in service

  • Performing varied and complex work involving the inspection, maintenance, overhaul, modification, repair, testing and troubleshooting of electrical, electronic, hydraulic, and mechanical components and body equipment found on revenue and non-revenue rail transit vehicle

  • Interprets test results to diagnose malfunctions, planning of troubleshooting procedures

    using schematics, diagrams and technical manuals.

  • To gain in depth knowledge in vehicle control units, and related electronic systems

  • Repairs/overhauls hydraulic, pneumatic, electric brake systems components, gear drive

    units, wheels and other related equipment

  • Assignments vary from the running repair nature to complete analysis of vehicle problems involving modifications and bench work associated with the removal, testing, troubleshooting, repairing/modifying and re-installing of components

  • Energizes and de-energizes the overhead traction power system within the maintenance

    shop utilizing a LOTO process

  • Supporting the testing, commissioning and maintenance activities of LRVs in yard

    or on mainline.

  • Safely supporting the return of LRV’s to the maintenance facility and to verify performance

  • Conducts, supports and operates re-railing equipment and acts as flag person for the protection of the public, employees and trains during emergencies and rerouting of trains

  • Documents and completes work orders to support work activities such as inspections repairs made, parts usage and work in progress

  • Conduct miscellaneous duties as reasonably requested by management

  • Communicates and liaises with CFF staff as required to support revenue service operations

Knowledge and Skills

  • You must possess excellent communication skills and the ability

    to work in a team environment.

  • Read and understand schematics, procedures, service and safety manuals.

  • Exercise good judgement and effectively solve practical problems; respond quickly, calmly and appropriately to emergency situations.

  • Write work orders and routine reports in a clear and concise manner and capable of following work processes and routines.

  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

  • Acquire competency required in mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems.

  • Conduct oneself professionally when dealing members of staff and line managers in OCC.

  • You possess the ability to work in an operational setting with tight deadlines

  • Able to demonstrate a high level of attention to detail and perform all assigned work in safe conditions.

  • Must be willing and able to work in all weather, on shifts, weekends, holidays and under pressure.

  • Will have the ability to identify and solve problems in a structured and analytical way.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Mechanical, Electrical or equivalent Engineering background required.
  • Experience within the rail transit or rail transportation industry (asset).
  • Must have a valid Class G Driver’s License and may require obtaining a class DZ license.

Working Hours

  • Permanent, Full-Time position Based-upon an average of 40 hours per week normally day shift
  • Requirement to be able to cover Day, Evening, Night and/or weekend shifts
