Detailed Overview: Performs and carries out a variety of social and recreational activities for assigned patients under the general direction of a senior position such as a Registered Nurse or Occupational Therapist; participates as a part of an interdisciplinary team to deliver established activity programs, maintain related records and provide input into program areas. Responsibilities:

  • Carries out a variety of individual and group activities such as mental aerobics, cooking, sports activities, music, community outings and special events; stimulates former interests of patients through discussion groups, speakers and magazines; teaches new skills of daily living including safety in the home.

  • Provides direction to volunteers during activity programs; demonstrates related techniques as required.

  • Performs limited food preparation such as heating prepared food according to HAACP such as coffee, tea and toast; assists patients who require help with their dining experience.

  • Participates and contributes to weekly interdisciplinary team meetings by providing input into patient activities; participates and provides input to quality improvement initiatives and in-services.

  • Sets up furnishings and equipment for activities to ensure a safe and tidy working environment; maintains activity bulletin board to ensure information of patient activities is current; maintains inventory of equipment, tools and materials; reports malfunctioning equipment and supply needs to the appropriate staff.

  • Performs clerical duties such as answering the phone, orders supplies, recording daily statistics, completing incident reports and other related activities, as required.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Education and Experience

Grade 12, completion of recognized recreational courses such as handicrafts, plus two (2) years' recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Successful completion of Food Safe Level 1 or equivalent certificate.
