Health Safety Environment Coordinator
About the role
The HSE Coordinator is responsible for overseeing and ensuring compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations on construction sites. This role involves the implementation and continuous improvement of safety programs, conducting safety inspections, providing training, and fostering a culture of safety among all employees and subcontractors.
Responsibilities: Ensure compliance with all relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations, including Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA). Maintain up-to-date knowledge of changes in HSE legislation and communicate updates to the team. Develop, implement, and maintain HSE policies, procedures, and programs. Conduct regular site inspections and audits to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety standards. Investigate incidents and accidents, providing detailed reports and recommendations for corrective actions. Organize and conduct safety orientation sessions for new hires. Provide ongoing training and education to employees on safety practices, emergency response procedures, and the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Ensure all training is current and compliant with Ontario regulations, including tracking certifications and scheduling renewals. Communicate, engage, and influence decision-makers and employees to ensure compliance with legislation and regulations. Foster a safety-first culture by conducting regular safety meetings and preparing toolbox talks for Supervisors to present. Maintain accurate records of all safety inspections, incidents, and training sessions. Prepare and submit regular reports on HSE performance metrics to management. Identify potential safety risks and develop strategies to mitigate them. Coordinate and participate in risk assessments and job hazard analyses. Coordinate emergency response drills and ensure all employees are familiar with emergency procedures. Act as the point of contact during emergency situations, providing guidance and support to the site team. Participate in the annual inspections of fall protection gear, confined space equipment, respirators, and other specialized safety equipment to ensure compliance and proper functioning. Support the Early and Safe Return to Work Program. Assist with the maintenance and audits of ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), and COR to ensure ongoing compliance and drive continuous improvement. Adhere to all company policies and procedures. Perform any other duties that may be superficially or generally assigned.
Qualifications: Minimum of 1-4 years of experience in HSE roles within the construction industry. A degree or diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field is an asset. Certification as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) is an asset. Experience in overseeing and managing complex safety programs on construction sites. Knowledge of Ontario’s OHSA, ISO 14001, COR, and other relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations. Strong leadership and team management skills with a focus on mentoring and developing HSE teams. Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence decision-makers and foster a safety-first culture. Proficiency in HSE management software and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
