The Opportunity
The Commercial Mortgage Division is responsible for developing relationships with Investors, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, and Commercial Borrowers to obtain the highest market share of Commercial mortgages within Canada. The Division is responsible for the assessment of mortgage applications in making lending decisions in adherence with the established mortgage underwriting policies and guidelines. The Division also has responsibility for reviewing required documentation for compliance, accuracy and completion in order to advance funds on approved mortgage applications as well as all requirements for mortgages while on service. The Division maintains a consistent focus on service excellence.
Reporting to the Executive Vice President, Commercial Mortgages, the Vice President, is responsible for managing the Commercial Funding, Commercial Asset Management, and Renewals department by executing business strategies and developing strong alignment with the Commercial Sales team to ensure seamless execution from origination through Funding, Asset Management, Loans Enforcement, and Renewals. The role oversees four direct reports and a total team of approximately 100 employees. The Vice President is responsible for ensuring that internal stakeholders—including the origination sales teams, Treasury, Legal, Finance, and Human Resources—are highly satisfied with the level of service provided. The role must also ensure that external stakeholders, including investors, third party clients, CMHC, and regulators, receive exceptional service. A key outcome of this role is maintaining a high level of engagement and satisfaction among team members, reflecting the strong culture at First National.
How you will contribute:
- Maintain, improve and ensure execution of Policies and Procedures for all departments.
- Manage investor operations from initial onboarding through portfolio management
- Implement technology solutions to drive sales and support efficiency
- Build and manage education and training initiatives for new and existing employees
- Enhance the quality and sophistication of all commercial data collection and analysis
- Assist in the training of all commercial mortgage members.
- Coordinate inter-department efficiencies are in place to ensure high quality loan underwriting and funding
- Add technology innovations to drive sales and support efficiencies
- Manages and resolves escalations
- Leads regular team meetings
- Attends regular Commercial Senior Management meetings in Toronto head office location
- Provides ongoing feedback and coaching to team members
- Stays current with latest industry and market trends and competition
- Adhere to policies /procedures to ensure AML requirements are met, when applicable.
The experience you need:
- 10+ years of progressive experience in commercial mortgages, commercial lending, or real estate finance, including leadership of operational teams.
- Deep knowledge of commercial underwriting, funding, servicing, and CMHC programs.
- Proven ability to lead multi disciplinary teams and develop senior level talent.
- Strong operational judgment with experience improving processes, controls, and service delivery.
- Exceptional communication and presentation skills, with the ability to influence internal and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex issues, competing priorities, and high pressure situations with sound judgment.
- Experience collaborating with Sales, Finance, Capital Markets, Risk, and Legal to deliver integrated commercial solutions.
Relationships: External: Senior management at other financial institutions, Investors, Auditors, Regulators, Brokers, Canada Mortgage Housing Corporation, Appraisers, Solicitors, and Commercial Customers/Borrowers
Internal: Interdepartmental team members including Finance, and Capital Markets to ensure a fluid and transparent First National customer experience
Working Environment and Physical Demands Analysis:
