About the role:
The Hospital strives to deliver care that is centred on patients and families. Patient and Family Centred Care (PFCC)
is the provision of care that is respectful of, and responsive to individual patient/family preferences, needs, and values
and ensures that those values guide all decisions. Creating a caring environment for patients and families ensures
continuity of care and fosters a learning environment. Applicants are required to have a demonstrated knowledge,
understanding and commitment to this care philosophy.
The Health Records Technician reviews surgical day care, emergency records, Oncology and ambulatory clinic
records extracting pertinent medical information in order to apply codes using the International Statistical
Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 10th version (ICD‑10‑CA), International classification of
disease Oncology (ICD‑O)and the Canadian Classification of Health Interventions (CCI). Clinical and demographic
data must be abstracted into software. The Technician must be able to code and abstract the required number of
charts during a shift while maintaining a high level of accuracy. Responsible for timely submissions to CIHI. The
Technician is responsible for processing all requests related to access and/or disclosure of personal health
information (PHI) as per legislation and hospital policy.
Employment Requirements
* Graduate of a recognized Health Records Technician/HIM program.
* Certified member with the Canadian Health Information Management Association in good standing with proof of
continuing professional education credits.
* Minimum two (2) years experience in coding and abstracting in emergency, day surgery, dialysis and/or oncology
in a healthcare facility.
* Strong understanding of professional standards with respect to privacy and confidentiality, security of client
information, and client records management.
* Knowledge of medical terminology, pharmacology, anatomy, physiology, disease processes, TNM Staging
classifications and operative procedures.
* Familiar with CIHI data abstraction submission and Ontario Health (CCO) Databook requirements.
* Proficient in computer software such as Hospital ADT, Abstracting Software, Windows, Microsoft Office
applications, EMR, and other Health Records software as required.
* Uses interpersonal skills effectively to build and cooperative relationships.
* Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
* Submits workload measurement reports on a weekly basis.
* Commitment to continued professional and personal growth and development through CHIMA Continuing
Education Program and Self.
Salary Range: $30.656 to 31.332
