About the role

The Federal Bridge Corporation Limited (FBCL) is a Crown corporation responsible for overseeing the Canadian federal interests in four international bridge crossings between Canada and the United States. Its mandate is to provide the highest level of stewardship so that the international bridges and associated structures are safe and efficient for users. FBCL owns, manages and operates international bridges and associated structures in Sault Ste. Marie, Point Edward, Lansdowne (Thousand Islands) and Cornwall, Ontario.

Reporting to the Manager of Asset Planning or Chief Operating Officer and working closely with other Asset Planning staff for technical guidance and oversight, the GIS Student will provide technical support for Asset Management software tools.

Duties and Responsibilities

GIS Data Management and Expansion Support 60%

  • Perform data entry, manipulation, verification, gap analysis, geo-referencing plans digitizing assets and geo-processing the data within geo-databases and metadata in ArcGIS;
  • Modify asset attribute tables, domains, attribute formatting, symbology, unique values for improved visual representations, linkages to other business data, layer structures and user functionality;
  • Geo-Reference various objects including aerial photography, engineering drawings, images, legal plans, and other external resource files;
  • Maintain corporate geo-database and user portal, including publishing feature classes and data, ensuring data continuity and consistency; and,
  • Collect and compile data from office sources and field data sources using digital collection tools (mobile Field Maps app).

Project Initiatives Support 20%

  • Assist various projects including condition assessments, lifecycle analysis, operations and maintenance practices development, capital and operating budget forecasting and the roll out of asset management software solutions; and,
  • Assist various inter-departmental project initiatives to expand Asset Management capabilities.

GIS and CMMS Tools Support 20%

  • Provide assistance in ongoing technical support to maintain and update the GIS and CMMS software tools to ensure access to accurate and complete spatial data and to ensure analysis and reporting functions are working effectively;
  • Provide “help desk” assistance for GIS and CMMS users internally and assist in providing training initiatives toward the use of software tools;
  • Create and maintain queries, reports, forms, templates and dashboards within GIS and CMMS software environments to meet the needs of users, underground utility assessment; and,
  • Document current GIS, CMMS and asset management processes.

Essential Qualifications

  • Successful completion of one year and currently enrolled to continue in a diploma program from a recognized college or university in GIS with a Civil Engineering and/or Environmental Design and/or Urban Planning focus is required;
  • Enrolment in Degree or Diploma programs;
  • ESRI GIS Certifications, or demonstrated progress tracking toward certifications is an asset;
  • Completed first year educational hands on experience or completed coop placement experience in GIS in required, preferably working with physical asset inventories such as municipal services, utilities, buildings and structures using ESRI ArcGIS tools;
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to learn techniques for rigorous data validation needed to support critical information systems, software tools, cost calculations and records management is required;
  • Educational knowledge and hands on experience in ESRI ArcGIS with database design and management including programing scripting (Python) and SQL to develop and maintain spatial infrastructure inventory geo-databases is required;
  • Strong computer technical skills enabling data entry, manipulation, and validation in software tools, geo-databases and spreadsheets with the ability to communicate findings, results and explain methodologies used to others is required;
  • Basic ability to interpret engineering structural and site plan drawings, building plans and legal property survey plans is required;
  • Basic awareness of Asset Management philosophies and industry software tools such as CMMS is required;
  • Excellent verbal, written and relationship building and teamwork engagement skills is required;
  • Well-developed time management skills, understanding the importance of meeting deadlines, and willingness to undertake a variety of tasks and other duties as assigned is required;
  • Ability to report to work in person at the FBCL Point Edward office is required;
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Reliability security clearance is required; and,
  • Ability to demonstrate and maintain language requirement (English Essential) is required.
