The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Manager, Geoinformation Technology to join our Geology & MRMR team in Sudbury /Toronto.

The role is a permanent position; this posting is for an existing position vacancy.

As a Manager, Geoinformation Technology, you will be responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and maintenance of the geological database ensuring its updating and standardization, as well as managing spatial/geographic information and documentation, and the manages the development and implementation of mining technology solutions across Vale Base Metals operations and projects globally. Technical responsibilities involve updating the geological database structure, ensuring data reliability and security, compliance with legal and operational standards, proposing new technologies, recommending technical improvements, validating technical information, and coordinating the development of new technical solutions, leading and mentoring a team of geologists, GIS analysts, and technical staff, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

Additionally, in this position you will:

  • Lead and mentor a team of geologists, GIS analysts, and technical staff, fostering a culture of continuous improvement. Ensure the integration and standardization of practices globally, including operations, projects and exploration data.
  • Oversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of geological and GIS databases. Ensure data reliability, quality, and security through robust database governance and QAQC protocols.
  • Lead the collection, mapping, analysis, and integration of spatial and non-spatial data using GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS). Develop and implement systems for efficient data storage, retrieval, and interoperability between GIS and other enterprise systems.
  • Develop and enforce data standards, quality control measures, and metadata documentation. Implement QA/QC processes to prevent and identify errors, ensuring data accuracy, completeness, and logical consistency. Conduct internal audits and peer reviews of technical work and key stages.
  • Provide technical support to external resource evaluation audits, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
  • Perform periodic audits in the database to assess database consistency and address actions for improvement and corrections.
  • Develop and maintain corporate Database, QAQC, GIS standards and guidelines, geological practices (core logging, mapping, sampling) ensuring alignment with best business practices and legal requirements.
  • Ensure the updating and maintenance of geological/mining software and databases used by the company.
  • Recommend and implement process improvements for performance gains and/or cost reductions. Stay up to date with emerging GIS technologies, best practices, and industry trends, also supporting the implementation of mining technological solutions.

About You

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).

Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in geological exploration, resource estimation, and project management.

Skills:

  • Extensive experience in geology, mining engineering, or a related field.
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements (S-K 1300, NI 43-101) for mineral reserves and resources disclosure.
  • Knowledge of geological modeling software and database management systems, geoprocessing.
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing geological standards and guidelines.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong leadership and team management abilities.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to lead and work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
