BASF’s Agricultural Solutions division connects innovation, customers, partners and agricultural experts and integrates sustainability criteria into all business decisions. We help farmers deliver the best possible outcomes, working to achieve the balance between economic, environmental and social value creation for sustainable and efficient agriculture.

As a key member of the Agricultural Solutions Canada Leadership Team and the Global Agricultural Solutions Legal Core Team, the General Counsel plays a critical role in guiding our legal strategy, ensuring compliance, and enabling business success across Canada. This position reports operationally to the Vice President and Global Division General Counsel, Agricultural Solutions, and administratively to the Vice President, Agricultural Solutions Canada. The General Counsel leads the Agricultural Solutions Canada Legal team and serves as a trusted advisor, helping the organization achieve its strategic and operational goals while upholding the highest standards of legal and ethical integrity.

As a General Counsel, you create chemistry by...

  • Serving as the principal legal advisor and providing proactive, solution-oriented counsel on diverse legal and business matters while aligning legal strategy with Agricultural Solutions Canada's business priorities and risk profile.
  • Actively contributing to strategic planning and decision-making, ensuring legal considerations are being embedded in all business initiatives.
  • Overseeing corporate governance, supporting the Board of Directors, preparing and managing board materials, advising on fiduciary duties, and ensuring compliance with governance obligations for Agricultural Solutions Canada.
  • Serving as the First Line of Defense Compliance Officer, supporting the Agricultural Solutions Canada Board of Directors in ensuring compliance with Canadian laws and internal policies, while liaising with the Chief Compliance Officer and the Compliance Community to implement and monitor compliance programs, training, and reporting.
  • Providing ongoing legal guidance on employment-related matters—such as recruitment, contracts, workplace policies, terminations, and employee relations—in collaboration with the Country Employment Attorney, while supporting the Agricultural Solutions Canada Board of Directors and the HR team in ensuring compliance with provincial and federal employment legislation, including occupational health and safety, human rights, and privacy laws, and advising on labour relations and collective bargaining where applicable.
  • Identifying and mitigating legal and regulatory risks across all areas of the business, while overseeing litigation and dispute resolution—including managing external counsel and legal budgets—and developing and maintaining protocols for crisis management and ongoing legal risk mitigation.
  • Leading or overseeing the negotiation and drafting of complex commercial agreements—including supply, distribution, licensing, joint ventures, and M&A—while providing legal support for marketing, advertising, and product claims to ensure ongoing compliance with Canadian competition and advertising laws.
  • Leading and developing the Agricultural Solutions Canada Legal team by fostering a collaborative, high-performing, and inclusive culture, while promoting continuous learning and ongoing professional development within the legal function.
  • Overseeing the legal department budget and external counsel spend in alignment with Agricultural Solutions Legal budgets, while implementing strategies for efficient use of external legal resources—including preferred counsel programs and performance metrics.

If you have...

  • A Law degree and membership in good standing with the Bar of a Canadian province (Alberta preferred but not required).
  • Minimum 15 years of legal experience, including significant experience in commercial negotiation and drafting.
  • Broad legal expertise in corporate/commercial law, mergers and acquisitions, competition law, marketing and advertising, litigation, regulatory compliance, and corporate governance.
  • Experience in the agriculture industry, particularly in areas such as crop protection, seed and trait technologies, seed treatment, agri-tech innovation, or biotechnology, is considered a strong asset.
  • Strong business acumen and ability to provide pragmatic, risk-balanced legal advice.
  • Proven ability to influence senior executives and lead within a matrixed organization.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with a collaborative and empathetic Agricultural Solutions approach.
