We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Engineering Lab Technician to join our Engineering Team.   

The position will primarily work in a laboratory environment, performing hands-on work on commercial appliances. The role involves working with high-amperage electrical equipment as well as equipment utilizing combustible fuel gases. The candidate will be expected to learn to operate specialized laboratory testing instruments safely, using correct techniques and to a high level of proficiency. Contributing to the development of the laboratory should be expected.

 

The candidate must have robust problem-solving and communication skills to effectively collaborate with the engineering team. A strong background with mechanical, electrical and gas concepts will be important. The ability to carry out tasks independently and effectively will be critical for this role, as well as documenting test results clearly in professional reports and communicating findings.

 

The ideal candidate would have a strong mechanical aptitude, familiarity with a variety of tools and an understanding of electrical concepts and gas systems. A problem-solving mentality, willingness to learn, adapt and be both effective independently and in a team environment.

 

Reporting to the Engineering Lab Manager, this position is based in our Mississauga, Ontario facility. This is a full-time, permanent role that is a replacement to headcount. 

 

 

Key Tasks & Responsibilities:

• Assist in prototyping, assembly and troubleshooting of new and existing appliances.
• Prepare test setups and perform laboratory tests for regulatory compliance and product development
• Collect and analyze test data, prepare accurate technical reports and document findings in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 standards
• Learn complex test procedures and operation of specialized test equipment. Develop expertise in this area
• Follow, help develop and enforce laboratory procedures. Take an active role in the maintaining the safety of the laboratory
• Become familiar with the different equipment product lines and the particulars of how each of the models operate
• Maintain lab cleanliness, organization, and calibration schedules for all testing equipment

 

Qualifications

• Specialized Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities 

  1. Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) and report writing
  2. Hands-on experience with lab tools and instruments
  3. Ability to read technical drawings, schematics, and test procedures
  4. Demonstrated mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills
  5. Strong organizational, documentation, and communication skills

• Education and Experience

  1. Associate degree or technical diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electronics, HVAC, or related field
  2. 5+ years of experience in a lab, R&D, or product testing role, preferably in appliance or gas and electric equipment industries

• Preferred Qualifications

• 1. TSSA Gas Technician Certificate G.3 or G.2 

  2. Familiarity with gas systems, combustion principles, and pressure/flow measurement tools, gas regulators, orifices, burners, and igniters

  3. Experience working on electrical appliances or electrical systems

  4. Knowledge of UL/ANSI/CSA/EN/IEC standards for gas and electric appliances 

  5. Ability to read technical drawings, schematics, and test procedures

  6. Demonstrated mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills

  7. Strong organizational, documentation, and communication skills

  • Working Conditions 
    1. Heavy computer use.  
    2. Heavy lab environment. 
    3. Must be able to stand/walk/sit for extended periods.
