About the role

On Team Xbox, we aspire to empower the world’s 3 billion gamers to play the games they want, with the people they want, anywhere they want. Gaming, the largest and fastest growing category in media & entertainment, represents an important growth opportunity for Microsoft. We are leading with innovation, as highlighted by bringing the Game Pass subscription to PC, bringing Xbox to new devices with Cloud Gaming, and our recent acquisition of Activision Blizzard King creating exciting new possibilities for players.

The GDE (Gaming Devices and Experiences) Operations Team, also known as GOT, is the operational hub for Xbox hardware engineering organization that creates devices to delight passionate gamers. GOT’s mission is to power product and business heroes to scale and achieve more. We serve and connect the organization horizontally, vertically, and 360 degrees—driving alignment across orgs and functions, accelerating programs, and leading the transformation of Xbox hardware business operations to align with Xbox’s strategic direction and priorities.

This Director of Sustainability role will focus on sustainability initiatives for Xbox hardware. This role will drive cross-functional alignment, technical execution, and business impact across carbon accounting, zero waste strategy, repair business models, and sustainable product development. This role will partner closely with hardware engineers, devices operations, Legal, Finance, and Corporate and Gaming for Sustainability (G4S) teams. The ideal candidate will have consumer electronics hardware background, deep program-management expertise, basic finance understanding, a systems-thinking mindset, and a passion for driving environmental innovation at scale.

The Director of Sustainability understands navigating ambiguity within highly matrixed organizations and brings a proven track record of leading complex, cross-functional technical programs that deliver measurable business and environmental impact. This role requires someone who can influence across multiple teams and disciplines without direct authority, and who can synthesize technical, business, and environmental perspectives into clear, actionable strategies. A systems-thinking mindset is essential.

Executive communication and stakeholder management skills are critical, along with financial acumen that includes experience in COGS modeling, OpEx/CapEx tradeoffs, and sustainability ROI. The Director of Sustanability demonstrates analytical capabilities, with the ability to interpret data and derive meaningful insights.

A passion for sustainability and environmental innovation at scale is central to this role. Familiarity with sustainability frameworks, carbon accounting, and environmental compliance standards is expected. Experience with Xbox hardware or the broader consumer electronics industry is a plus, as is an understanding of sourcing, supply chain, and manufacturing operations.

Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.
