Purpose:
Their position is to code patient’s information by reviewing their charts for the purpose of assigning appropriately for decision making. Enter appropriate procedural codes into a computerized patient abstract software system. Government mandated data elements as well as facility-specific data elements are also captured on abstracting.
Education and Training:
-
Graduate from a CHIMA-recognized HIM program
-
Member in good standing with certificate of registration in the Canadian College of Health Information Management (CHIM Credential)
-
Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certification required
Experience:
-
A minimum of five (5) years of experience in a hospital setting
-
Health Record experience, attention to detail and good data entry skills
-
Experience with ICD-10CA; ICD-O, CCI and AJCC Coding Classification systems
Knowledge/ Skills/Ability:
-
Demonstrated knowledge of and proficiency in Medical Terminology
-
Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office software, i.e. Excel, Word and Outlook
-
Proven success with process/workflow analysis and process improvement
-
Strong analytical and problem solving skills
-
Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and manage multiple priorities
-
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with a variety of medical and non-medical personnel and other clients
Personal Suitability:

Demonstrated positive work record and good attendance record
